  • BFI Torque Arm Insert Review on DSG

    What?
    BFI Torque arm insert

    Where from?

    How much?
    $70

    Installation?
15 mins @ 3TR (TimTarTeamRacing, hehehe). Requires trolley jack, another jack to lift up the insert, a socket set and torque wrench. Out of 1 to 10, 10 being the hardest, this is a 2.

    Tranny:
    DSG

Been reading about these for ages on the other forums and only recently did Dub Addiction get these in for the newer MK5s. Clocked around a thousand KMs so far and here are my impressions:

    • In car vibration increased, notably in reverse (especially reversing up a hill!), slowly taking off in 1st gear, and stationary at lights whilst in gear (no stress, whack her in N!). Don’t say i didn’t tell you so!!! It settles down with time, but it still there.

    • Shifts feel quicker (most noticeable in upshifts than down), more direct, and more precise. It’s quite difficult to explain, but with the TAI installed, the shifts of the DSG for one, feel quicker, and two feel like it’s making a better effort to change gears.

To try and put it in a way you can understand, if driving a manual car, the driver has the option of up shifting at his or her speed. Ie, 1st to 2nd could be a sloppy change whilst putting around town, or 1st to 2nd could be a lightning quick flat shift whilst running down the strip. With the TAI installed, it feels like the shifts are always lightning quick (and yes, even more so than without the TAI installed!). The feeling is noticeable within the first couple of minutes of driving.

I don’t have the DSG flash on my car, but this was the result i was expecting of it once i did get it. So know im expecting it to be quicker again with the DSG flash!! (or maybe disappointed as this mod was so much cheaper yet so effective, who knows?)

    Conclusion:
Great price. Great retailer. Great product. It won’t be for everyone as the vibration will put some off (harden the f*^k up people!!!) but the difference it makes it just amazing!!! I’ve had it a while and have come quite used to it. I’ve driven another DSGed GTI since and to be honest, the shifts feel slow with hesitation!  Get them while stocks are there, but like i said, whoever says the vibration isn’t there is either lying, or has a golf that vibrates a bit already.

Nice review Dex. Do you not think your vibration issues are due to having a 90 duro TAI? Most people recommend an 80 duro for less NVH with DSG's.

The BFIs designate their stiffness on a different scale. From what Dub Addiction said, (now dont quote me) the BFI is around 98 duro.

The vibration i can live with and as mentioned only in certain situations. Trust me ive had much much worse NVH from my other cars and this to me is nothing.

There are possibly issues for MK5ers that are constantly in start stop traffic, but for the times it does vibrate (reversing, stationary, take off) its a very minor issue.

I have to add, those with manual transmissions can get rid of the additional vibration with a little more gas than normal.

I've read a lot in regards to the increased vibrations in the car - especially noticable with the diesels which is why I'm reluctant to install mine that I got from APR. Hey if anyone wants to buy mine off me PM as I doubt I'll be putting mine in.
