  • GTI/Pirelli Rear Bumper Removal

Hi Guys - long time no post..

The Pirelli project is almost done, all I'm waiting on now is my Yokohama Advan wheels, and I'm now considering doing some blackouts on the rear bumper...

Take a look at these before and after shots and you'll see what I mean... (I also have a yellow pirelli)... I just mocked these up in Photoshop to visualise the idea...

    Before:

    After:

    Looks pretty spiffy eh...

I was thinking on getting it painted high-gloss piano black, with a clear coat over the top.

Anyway a quick question - does anybody know how to/have info on how to remove the lower part of the bumper on the Mk5? The rear bumper is made up of 2 parts which splits horizontally right in the middle of the licence plate section (right across the whole bumper)... You can clearly see it in the images above..

I'd really like to take the lower rear bumper off myself, and then bring it into the spray painters for them to work on it. That way I don't need to leave the car there with them for days on end....

    Thanks guys...

The project is almost complete.. Will post pics soon, it's been a very expensive journey!

Its easier to take the whole bumper off before removing the bottom section as there are tabs that hold it in. The easiest way is to work them loose from the other side with a flat bladed screw driver. I did this before getting my rear done. Brings the cost down if you can do part of the work yourself

Disconnect them! They unplug on the back of the sensors from the loom.

This is exactly what I was planning to do to mine. Just the thought of having to pull things apart though.....

Another thought was to have vinyl applied instead. Not sure if this is feasible. I would prefer matt black.

How about replacing the black part you were going to paint with black mesh? Do you think it would look good?

Looks a little unfinished to me. Once painted it adds that certain quality. Anyway I may not bother as it seems too much work to me. Shouldn't be hard masking that small area off and spraying it yourself? Any painters out there care to advise?

I think that section looks a lot better with some contrast. Looks terrible all colour coded. Personally if it was me, I'd rather get that section in Carbon Fibre- OSIR offers a few variations that snap into that section or possible they may be replacements for the whole lower section. Probably more expensive option then painting but why go budget on a Pirelli? If you have no problem with cheap you can buy an imitation carbon fibre vinyl that can easily be applied to that area. Its very cheap and if you dont like it you just peel if off.

This is more of an issue with lighter coloured cars. Don't notice so much with black or graphite.
