  • head unit security code probs

I have recently bought a RCD500 head unit to replace my RCD300, mainly for 6 stacker function. Got everything hooked up no probs but when I put in the code that was supplied on the card it just comes up with SAFE and locks after 2 attempts.

I have followed the owners manual to the letter and made sure I pressed the enter button for at least 2 seconds after I input the code. Funny thing is the instant I press the enter button SAFE comes up on the display?!

The code provided is the last 4 numbers of the head unit serial number, is this the code normally used?

Anyone able to help or is it a visit to dealer fix?
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

I have not tried changing head units on the VW. But what I can tell you is that on the Polo GTI I had the same thing come up.

I disconnected the battery when I reconnected the battery the head unit displayed "Safe", I dont have the pin code for it so I planned to get down to the dealer to get it when I had some time.

After 5 days I still had not been to VW to get it sorted, however the headunit just started working again. I did nothing to the headunit to get it going again and I drove the car everyday of those 5 days. It appears as though it relearns the code, but im not sure if it will do that when you change the headunit.

If the head unit is replaced the code is only required the first time as it's saved into the car (can't remember the module - it's the convenience module or instrument cluster I think) so if the battery is disconnected or the headunit pulled out and put back in later the code is not required.

Not sure how it would take 5 days to re-enable but may be worth bringing up next time you get some warranty work performed.

Problem fixed. The previous owner rang VW dealer and got the code...after arguing that the first one they gave him didn't work.
