      Sure for GolfV TDI, 32 mm spanner or adjustable spanner would do.
      If you get socket get as short socket as possible and universal joint and extension.

        Golf GTI

        I don't want to use an adjustable shifter, as it damages (cosmetically) the plastic.

        to get around damaging it, in the past, I taped masking tape over it before using a shifter on it.

              Should be 36mm.

              To the OP, there's also a handy tool for draining the oil out of the housing first if you want to save making a mess;

                thanks for the info..

                36mm, awesome, same as our BMW.

                Re: T40057

                Might be handy, but doesn't do what a plastic bag can't. lift up filter, let it drain for 30 secs & slip an plastic bag within an ice-cream container underneath it wipe the engine bay down with an old rag.

                USD$150 will take ages to recoup the cost at 2 oil changes a year.

                thanks for the suggestion.

                  $150USD???

                  Sorry mate, didn't know they'd gone up to that price. I picked one up a few years ago for about $50USD, or somewhere around that price.

                    everything about VWs are pricey, but USD$150 is beyond excessive.

                    looks to me like a USD$20 part.

                    even at that price, I'd doubt I'd get one.
