I must be badly missing something. Put the gti up on jacks, buy oil, filter and washer, check the fluid levels, check brake wear and rotate tyres every 5k.
Run the VCDS over ( nothing indicated), all o/k.
The techs have there place but this ( minor service ) is not difficult to complete ( $80 - $90 per hour, ouch ).
The techs will get the major services or if trouble is indicated.
Please ,please correct me if I am wrong.
Regards John

If you car is under warranty you have to have the servicing done as per VW's specifications, the minor services include a lot of other items that you missed and if they're providing a warranty it's only reasonable that you follow their requirements. If you don't follow their requirements don't expect warranty, especially in areas like the engine.
Do you complain about a plumber or electrician charging $150 per hour? The GTI is a 40K+ car, there's 2 hours of labour the first year you own it, maybe 3 or 4 the second, 2 hours the third and 5 or so the fourth year and 2 the fifth. Say around 14 hours over 5 years. Hardly a large expense to get either VW or an independent mechanic to do the servicing is it?
What is a good engine oil to use for the TSI engine?
Mobil 1? Shell Helix?
I'd use a 504.00/507.00 oil as they're all fully synthetic, found out what your local dealer uses or choose one from a brand you like as you can't go wrong.
Mobile 1 ESP can only be purchased in 20 litre drums however.
I did mine about 2 weeks ago, at ESSENDON, first they said $210 for oil and oil filter...
Then i said i got quoted $180 at 'GLEN'..(i lied)
So they offer $190 at 7500 klm, so i said k...
DONE....

I don't think no one is doubting you must complete the minor service in full by a mechanic, however the 7.5k service is in addition to the required service.
if you've booked your car for an extra oil change inbetween services, I wouldn't want a full inspection as you'll be paying for it; you will be paying for it at the 15k service anyway.
To change the oil in the GTI is no harder than any other car (in fact with the oil filter on top of the engine, it's easier than most). Use an approved oil & OEM Filter, 15 min job. I don't see any issues with doing additional oil changes yourself. If you can change a tyre, you can change your own oil.
I think most people complain about a plumber or electrician charging $150 per hour, but for some jobs you need them as it's illegal to do simple jobs yourself. It's not illegal to change your own oil.

Thanks Maverick,
What do the numbers 504.00/507.00 mean? Viscosity?
Thank you Maverick,
You are one of a few who cared enough to reply.
I do not mean to sound miserable, but I am very aware of paying tech wages for the service of the apprentice.
The 15K Service for the GTi (petrol) involves :
*Change oil and Filter
*Reset service interval
*Rotate wheels
*Check (visual),windshield washer level, brake fluid level, brake pad thickness, brake damage leaks, airbag system, tyres, thread wear and tyre pressure.
The 30K Service is similar, with additional :
*Engine check for leaks
*Exhaust, check for damage/leaks
*Lubricate doors
*Check coolant level
*Auto Trans, check for leaks
*Driveshaft, check boots
*On Board Diagnostics, check fault memory/purge. (30k and first check ????)
*Check spare tyre
*Check front axle dust seals, tie rods
*Adjust headlights
*Road test, aircon, steering, braking, power accessories
*Adjust tyre pressure.
As I am using the VW approve oil, the correct filter, the VCDS is not indicating any errors, I would be really interested in being made aware of the extra ( unscheduled ) maintenance that is occurring during the service.
The Service techs will always be involved in the major services and the indication of future TSB`s.
There is just so much visual (time consuming) work, being paid for that the average car enthusiast is more than capable (if interested) of addressing.
I thank you again and invite other forum members to participate.

ps - I do change my own tap washers and on more than one occasion have cleared the sewer (plumbers will not arrive on Friday nights, Saturday rates are better).

Not sure where you get the details of what's supposed to be done - there are items missing from your list. The 15,000k service does include diagnostics checks and the 30,000k service includes brake fluid change. Both these items are missing from your list of tasks.

2008 Blue Graphite GTI DSG with Latte leather. SOLD 4/9/2024
Correct Gerhard.
I flush the brake system each 30000 kms on my customers cars.
Full scan and report. Wheel swap, front to rear if required.
It certainly doesnt take 3 hrs though, and my customers get the job for under $200. I use genuine oil filters and Fuch oil.
Its good for me and all good for my late model VW customers.
They are soooo easy to service compared to 30 plus year old kombis ect!!
I have been repairing VWs for 36 years this year!!

I assumed that he meant the services (ie 15K/12 months, 30K/24 months), I don't call the in between oil change a service as all I'm getting done is the oil change and nothing else.
if you've booked your car for an extra oil change inbetween services, I wouldn't want a full inspection as you'll be paying for it; you will be paying for it at the 15k service anyway.
You don't have to have the service done, all you do is ask for a oil change and they'll do exactly that.

Neither do I if you're moderately competent, in my case I'd rather drop it at the dealer and pay $148.20 with a free loan car whilst it's being changed, it's not much more than the cost of doing it myself and it keeps the relationship with the dealer plus if I have any warranty work I can get it done at the same time.
Gerhard,
Thank you for the service update. I would have changed the brake fluid at 30K or two years. The service schedule came from the USA, I could not find anything more specific for 'Rest of the World'.
Very interesting to hear from the forum members in regard to service costs .

John
