  • Leather seats wearing on a mk5 gti after only 10000 kms????

Hi, just wondering if its normal to have both outer armrests on the drivers and passanger seats wearing after doing just only 10000kms on my07 gti?

should this be covered under warranty? or will it be considered wear and tear?

    and finally is it common?

If you mean the bolsters on the seat where you drag your a. across every time you get in and out of the car than yes it is going to be considered fair wear and tear by the dealer unless it's really bad. Post some pics of the wear.

Due to the design you really do need to be careful about how you get in and out of the car. The leather is not going to stay new looking. As suggested post up some pics so we can get an idea of what youre talking about.

The secret to getting out of these cars is to swing your outer leg out and over the bolster and put pressure on the plastic part. My drivers side bolster is in better condition than my passenger side and I rarely have anyone else in my car. I put it down to being aware of how i exit the seat.

Its a wonder that the Germans have not added this to the manual

Step one swing leg over bolster etc etc.

still having said that. I think the underlying issue is the quality of the leather. It really isnt that hard wearing. Although im sure maintaining it is important too. Mine is due for some conditioning.

I dressed the leather in boh our cars 2 weekends ago. My little girl got in and said something like "Hey Dad, why is this seat so soooooft". She's a girl after my own heart that one.

I suggest some cleaning and conditioning, and next time you are in the service centre of passing by get them to take a look at it.

Bahhhh... leather sucks, will never have it in a vehicle.

(Actually, the reason I don't have it is because the wife and I are vegetarians)

...and that's one thing I love about VW making leather an option in most of their vehicles. Besides, how can you not like the GTI's cool Interlagos design fabric!

I'm presuming you have a VW.
Have you removed the leather from the steering wheel and gearstick
We don't want this to interfere with your vegetarianism,

On a more serious note when I looked at purchasing a new Jetta I had a look
at a few used ones in the lot and was not impressed by the wear and look
of the leather seats, and most had under 10000k's.
And for this reason went cloth.

in my experience if the leather has worn down.. cloth will have worn worse..

The leather seats are sports seats and the thigh bolsters are higher than the cloth ones, thus maybe more likely to wear quicker, but like Sage says cloth doesn't wear as well as leather. That's in the Mark VI anyway. Neil how have your cloth seats worn?

The shorter your legs and therefore the closer to the front the seat sits the more likely you are going to have a problem.

I have a hole in the cloth on the drivers side - can't help short legs. Should get mine fixed shortly as part of my company detailing the car before I buy it.
