  • Anyone lowered using springs? ( not coilovers )

Just wondering if anyone out there has lowered their Golf using shortened or modified springs? Everyone seems to be lowering using coilovers which I'm sure is the best method but its by far the most expensive. Is it really that much better to justify the extra $2000 - $2500?

Interested in what brand of springs people have used, their experiences with them ( ie the ride quality ) and what sort of drop they achieved.

i have a set of pedders soft springs. they lowered my car 1 1/2 inches all around. found it wasnt low enough so went a further 1 inch to the front & further 2 inches to the rear. ride quality is ok. you cant expect it to be good after lowering it 3 1/2 inches

    shocks are standard

Running H&R sports springs only on the standard shocks until I can afford to replace. Works well and looks nice to boot..

H&R springs on stock suspension here also, it's nice and low and the ride is fine.

Pedders on mine. Totally happy with ride and handling. Perfect drop height. Look at my pics on here for an idea of new ride height compared to yours.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

how far do the H&R springs drop the ride?

Any ideas on cost? I dont mind pedders though 1.5" aint enough.. need 2" imo.

            Cheers.

How did you go a further 1 inch? Did you get different springs or get those one's modified?

I have FSD's and Eibach, went through a nice bit of road on the weekend and then jumped in my mates stock gti for the run back.

We then swapped thoughts about each others handling. the progressive spring rates of the Eibach mean a 'slower' turnin untill the springs compress, then it really grips, and usually requires a tweak in the steering to bring it back online with the apex.

I noticed how I miss the stock ride, when hitting some bumps rather than being thrown around the car sits alot nicer, almost of a bed of air, compared to being thrown around inside a washing machine. cornering speed is up alot tho, and there is more play/grip approaching the limit.

If I was to go back and do it again I'd look for some non progressive springs (maybe H&R's sports) and koni yellow shocks. the fsd's seem to take a bit of getting used to and personally dont do it for me.
