Thanks for that Mav.. It's good to have it put into perspective. Now I've just gotta balance out whether the extra $600 is worth the local support (and I think it will be).

When I decided to go the chipped route I went to a oettinger dealer first up who had some initial problems loading on the flash due to my ecu code. After 5 trips they finally worked it out and gave me the full program for a week long trial. Now this is no way me rubbishing the company but for the price I was extremely dissapointed!!!!!!!!!! Even if the flash was $1000 dollars cheaper I still would of said no!!! My car developed a nasty flat spot or hole and the low down urgency was woeful! The reason I went vw was the technology and I wanted to step away from the jap way of life ( I had a Nissan gtir before the vw) of nothing down low big lag then at 4000rpm boost!!! But once my car was flashed with oettinger that is what it was and in gear acceleration in 5th or 6th was appalling!! I stumbled across giac by accident whilst looking for someone to fit a LSD to my car the reflash was cheaper which isn't an issue but the dealer was closer which is a plus. I couldn't get a trial I think but the price was good so I chanced it!!! Immediately the car was quicker and more responsive but after a couple days of driving it it was a completely new animal. Low down it was responsive and there was no flat spot in the middle of the rev range. In gear acceleration is awesome and it just pulls and pulls to redline. When my fiancé got in the car for the first time it scared her and her words where " holy this reflash thingy must of been way more exspensive than the first one you had! I don't like it it scares me" in my book that means it's perfect! In no way am I bad mouthing the other tuners but in my situation I found giac a far superior tune way more resposive and it got rid of the niggling little flat spots my car had on the other tune!!!Good bye GTI Hello Golf R

Actually, through what Mav posted earlier in the other thread regarding the differences between the ed30/pirelli compare to standard GTI, kinda worry me abit on tuning. With just an increase in 30hp and 20nm VW did alot of mods to the engine.
Larger capacity fuel injectors (13% higher flow)
Larger intercooler (smaller then the S3)
Engine block main bearing caps, pedestals are reinforced
Conrods have larger rod bolts and new bearings
Pistons have 21mm gudgeon pins instead of 19mm
Piston top ring is improved
Recirculation Valve (blow off valve) not located on turbo
Imagine what an extra 40kw and 120nm would do to the engine?

More power equals more wear and tear but if the car is maintained well including additional oil changes there is no reason to suspect that the car will have a failure before a stock car. If it's driven hard all the time non stop on the other hand it's a different story and there's cars owned by forum members that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole (stock or chipped) because of the way they're treated.website: www.my-gti.com

Driving to the airport from Caulfield this morning I got 7.7l/100. It's a pretty easy drive but economy off the throttle seems OK. Still to early to call conclusively.
I have noticed that in auto the shift into second on medium throttle is a little different. I think the extra power and torque show up the inherent weaknesses of the DSG tranny......so maybe next step is the tranny flash.....

Well I think that the new map does not suit the DSG as well as the OEM map. It (feels like it falls into a bit of a hole) usually happens on light or medium throttle openings and may be a combination of the box short shifting (as it likes to do) and the torque delivery of the map. Its much happier being flogged than driven gently.

I've done a few more miles now and would def say the DSG is not as well matched to the new torque and power. Some changes are a little rough (5th to 6th full throttle at 130km/h in manual mode this morning), the whole DSG take up off the line issue is a little trickier.
Nothing drastic, and nothing that would make me concerned or not recommend doing this, but true IMHO.
Engine-wise I'm still really happy with the upgrade. Just go get one if you're umming and ahhing (brand of your choice).

I just call it how I see it. Nothing more to say.
Why would you change from 5th to 6th at full throttle doing only 130? Sounds like you're best off leaving the gearbox in D or S mode
