  • Post break-in problems... questions?

new member, GTI owner and lover..

Last week my GTI was broken into... they smashed the rear quarter and then the passenger window to get access.
Stupidly I had left my Ipod in the glovebox (which was closed). This was connected via a Connects2 kit. The theives cut the cable and took the Ipod.. but then left behind the cut end just to make me madder.

Anyways glass has been replaced; but now it seems like my electrics have gone haywire.
The car now locks itself if I have it unlocked for more than 2 mins, and even more strange the intermitent wipers have gone awire. eg when I adjust them on the auto setting they just stick on the fastest setting. But if I turn them off they seem to work on the auto setting but once again if you touch the adjust they go back to fastest.

Any ideas what is going on? Does it need some kind of reset after a break in.. or should I just head to my dealer.

Also anyone got a recommendation on a tinter for the two windows that need doing?

    Thanks and great forum!

Sorry to hear of your loss.
You should go back to the tinter that did your windows so that you can get a proper match.

Otherwise, any tinter would change bet $120-150 for two windows. Don't pay more than that. I paid $132 for 3M carbon impregnated tint (won't affect your mobile reception) from Universal Tints at Brookvale yesterday for two windows on mine.

    Where was your car parked?

        Thanks for the quick replies...

The car was tinted when I bought it.. it was a one year old from Chatswood Classic. Will a good tinter be able to match?

The car was parked in a secure underground carpark where I live. 20 cars were done in the same manner on the same night, including 5 Golf MkV!

Its the electrics thing that is annoying me the most.. oh and the cut cable. Contacted the guy who installed the kit, and he says I just need a new lead which is $30 not the whole kit... but its $80 call out to install! OUCH.

You can try and claim it on Insurance and get Chatswood Classic to redo the tints. Or you can go to several tint places to see if they can match it.

My Mk5 does that too, it locks itself if you haven't opened any door after unlocking it.

Ok... maybe this is just something I haven't noticed before!
And I guess the wipers could just be a dirty screen. I noticed that some of the police finger printing crap was on the top corner. Maybe this has run down the screen and is interfering with the rain sensor.

That really sucks, but it don't think the electrics are playing up, i think you're just noticing more features.

The automatic locking is a feature. It will lock itself if one of the doors isn't opened within 30 seconds of unlocking to prevent accidental unlocking via the remote.

The wipers have 5 positions: off, intermittent, slow, fast and brief wipe. Rain sensor only works with the intermittent setting.

Check the manual, it covers all of this stuff.

You are right about the autolocking... but the wipers were malfunctioning due to some fingerprinting stuff that got on the screen that was causing the intermettient to just be on fast.

Good news is I have nearly all my repairs complete... just waiting for the carkit guy to come and replace the cut lead. They can replace just that part of the connect2 lead, which saves me $300!

                    Great your sorting things out.

Had an issue with cars getting there wheels pinched where I stay near Epping at the GF place which has undercover parking.
I have installed a battery powered keypad motion sensor alarm from ****Smiths cost around $40 bucks and stays charged
                    for about a month.
Alarm has gone off a few times and can be heard from her 3rd floor apartment.

System will not let me say **** Smiths.
                    I'll put a space.... D ick Smiths .
