  • Surprising insurance quotes

I am currently looking at getting either a MkV GTI or R32 so thought I would knock up some online insurance quotes. I then did my current car for comparison and was surprised to find the Golfs cost more than my V8 Commodore!

My R32 was 890 with RACV
May depend on age, location, driving history etc etc.

    Prev 2008 R32 3 door DSG.
    Prev 2010 S3 Sportback Stronic.
    Now Lexus IS350 F Sport

Yes but with those variables the same in each quote but the choice of car different I am surprised to find a V8 6 litre to be cheaper to insure than a 4 cylinder 2 litre.

Insurance quote is not dependant on engine size.... it is a combination of risks, repair/replacement costs, statistics and lots of Actuary fudge factors.

You can't compare a car that is a locally produced low tech poorly constructed car with a euro produced high tech well constructed car. A monkey can build and repair the locally produced gear.

Can't argue with that logic...So when are we going to see you produce a local car??

Anyway...I would take the time out to actually ring the insurance companies themselves other than taking the online quote to gospel...Every time I have done an online quote it has been vastly different (in one case over $500) to actually ringing them and talking to them. There are a few variables that the online quotes sometimes dont take into consideration that a phone operator will.

That explains why the roads are full of hoons in their cheap to buy and cheap to insure monkey-built V6/8s.

Feels like monkeys built these MK5's with all the rattles.

They are pretty good prices. I wouldn't be complaining too much with those.

Not complaining just surprised that the 'smaller' cars cost more to insure.
