  • Golf won't go over 3000RPM - HELP!

    Hi Gang,

One of my best mates just got an 05 Sportline in white - and he's loving it. Test drive was great but soon after taking it home it now won't go over 3000RPM. I'm assuming 3000RPM is the limit for valet/limp mode?

Any ideas on what the problem could be and if there is a DIY fix or will he need to get hooked up to VAGCOM?

    Cheers guys.

Has an engine warning light popped up? If it goes into Limp mode a warning light should come up.

        Sure it's not a TDI?

P.S I love how it matches the car in your sig.

Yeah his is the same but he got lots of extras like Sunroof and only 40,000km but his cost $3000 more than mine. His is white and mine is standard black with 82,000km.

Oh... I just got what you were implying, that "my mates car" was actually my car. Um, not sure as why to why I would do that?

          Anyway...

          As far as I know it's a 2.0FSI.

            Won't go about 3000rpm when?

            Driving? Revving when stationary?

            DSG or Manual?

My advice would be call the dealer and have them sort it out. You've spent a decent amount of money let them sort it out, chances are you won't be able to fix it quickly and easily and what if it happens again.

The tractor GT's get it as well.

But doesn't the winter mode only limit torque in lower gears and has nothing to do with restricting the revs?

And the winter mode won't be fitted to his car as it's only a few models of the Golf that get it standard.

Ohh ok, I thought Winter Mode was a locked torque range with a minimum and maximum limit to make sure the revs wouldn't go too high and spin the wheels (in snow & ice).

                          Sorry for my flimsy info.

Its a manual and is limited to 3000rpm when driving through the gears. I'm not sure what happens if its in neutral and is revved.

Anyway certainly sounds like it's not a setting, or something 'normal' so I'll get him to go and get it sorted at a mechanic. Cheers.

Has he tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and reconnecting?

He should still get it checked by someone.

Winter just drops the torque like you have alluded too, car can still redline. My switch is disconnected.

Find someone with Vag com and look for errors!!
