  • Front Wiper Blades

Got the Golf seviced a while ago and they said wipers needed replacing. Quoted $105!!!! for all three.
Finally got around to changing the rubber. You don't have to buy the complete assembly.
Just remove the end cap (I used a screwdriver) from the end where the rubber blade does not move. This is the end that has a retaining hook holding the rubber blade in place. Then bend the restraining hook up and slide the old rubber blade out. Insert new blade, bend hook back and re-fit end cap.
First one took a while as the rubber was a tight fit. Second one took about 5 mins. Note they are different sizes, just cut to fit.
New rubber blades cost $12.79 at Repco, saved a packet! Got Trico TTR610 (i.e. 610mm) just get rid of the fittings, only need the rubber.
Sorry no pics as camera stuffed.
I thought I remember reading a write up of this somewhere but I cannot find it now?

Yeah that is a serious ripp off, you can buy new blades from Supercheap much less than that, even those double ones.

You should also try RainX it repells water off your windscreen , awesome stuff.

I certainly do not see any value for money at over $100 to replace all three blades.

I firmly believe in getting what you paid for, but come on, $100 bucks for three extruded bits of rubber, where the crude material cost less than 50cents. And I don't believe that there is $99.50 in research and development in making those wiper blades....., also counting the thousands of percent the middle man makes, etc...

        Certainly no point going "genuine"

guys i had my 30K kms service done a week ago, and they replaced both front wipers (so left the rear as is) and the receipt says $12.47 for wipers so I'm guessing you got done.

                ... Sorry

I assume the dealer quoted me for the whole assembly. Point to note is that Sales man at Autobarn also trying to tell me that I needed the whole assembly and could not replace the rubber. Autobarn wanted $29.99 each for the assembly but these must have been for a MkIV as different fitting.
At least at Repco the salseman suggested I give it a try and just replace the rubber.

acdcfan - Yea I think the link you found is to the writeup I was looking for. Unfortunately the pics are not working.

Yep that's the thread. I'll definately try this next time - a bit unfort that Snowy quit and took down all his pics etc...

FJ Steve, you could print to pdf then load the pdf doc. There's a few free 'print to pdf' drivers around eg CutePDF etc. Word 2007 might even have it built in.

I've had no luck feeding new inserts into the blade. It seems the Trico refill and Aunger refill cross section is a little thicker on the bit of rubber retaining the refill to the blade AND I cannot get the thing slid into the blade any more than about 100mm without forcing it. I don't want bend it the wrong way.

                          GTIMK5,
Was the 2nd one you did the passenger side? 'Coz it's a bit shorter isn't it.

I've had a good look at Kmart and Supercheap and the only blades there that have the same cross section are a replacement aero blade from Bosch (made in PRC) but am too stingy to handover 30 odd bucks each to SCA too!
Now looking on ebay from Europe and so far questioned 2 suppliers about a replacement areo blade sets for about $45AUD. They say they fit Passats and quote 1 x19" and 1x24" blades which happen to be the length on my Jetta. I figure all MkV would be the same? Yes?

Is there anyone out there that can offer better alternatives please?

                          Regards,

Not as clear windscreen as one would like.

                          Dear All,

I've found another thread where you can get the refills from VW. Will try a few frienddly dealers spare parts and see how I go!

                          Cheers,

i got complete replacement blades from Trico.
got them from my local PEP auto store in Sydney.

cost about $45 for both front blades. fitted in about 30 seconds.
easy. when i get home next week, i can post the part numbers if you wish.

note, these are complete replacement units, not just the rubber inserts.
                            and they work great.

                            Jason.

Guys, all the pics have been re-done and text has been updated in the how-to. For the MKV I would actually buy two sets of the rubbers and use a rubber from the second set to extend the length at the bottom of the drivers side wiper for this and subsequent wiper changes. (the how-to was for a MK4 and the MK5 Aero Wiper on the drivers side is a little longer I believe).

                              updated wiper DIY

                              Snowy.
