  • DSG or ABS noise in GTI

I have previously tried to find out about clunking DSG gearboxes and I have been taking the car to the dealer for several months. Their latest explanation for the clunk (something engaging) when I reach approx 22-25 kph, is that it is the ABS engaging. I was also told, that it doesn't happen on all vehicles with DSG, but it does on the Audi A4.

When I contacted VW Australia and told them I wanted to drive another GTI, so that I could compare it, they told me to wait for the service dept outcome. I have now contacted them again, asking for the test-drive.

Can anyone offer any advice on this.

So, are you saying that the clunk is the ABS engaging?

      Where abouts are you?

If you are really stomping on it the traction control will activate the ABS system to apply the front brake.

You will get a banging noise that makes you think the front of the car is about to fall off, and the TC light will flash.

Remove most of this behaviour with a Torque Arm Insert.

          Hi Gerhard,

I've just brought a 06 Polo Gti, and this happened to my car too, the bang happened when i was turning right and accelerated a little too hard (ESP light was flashing) i guess the ABS/traction control was kicking in, just wasn't sure if the bang was normal.

So from what you have said, the Torque Arm insert would get rip of this (or most of it), where can i can one? Pedders or something?

          Thanks, Kevin.

I thought the banging was just axle tramp from the wheel bouncing on a bump or something and starting to spin and grip, and the engine starts to rock around etc etc (and often keeps going until I back off). I can get it when going in a straight line, but usually on less than perfect road surfaces.

A TAI may help by restricting the movement of the engine.
