  • jerky acceleration between 1500 and 2000

My TSI has developed a jerky stutter when accelerating from 1500 to 2000, and the boost gauge needle jerks up and down with each stutter. Happens even after 20 minutes driving, so things should have warmed up. Is this when the supercharger kicks in (literally, perhaps)? I intend to take it to the dealer next week to check what's up (21,000km, so next service isn't due for a while).

    Any thoughts/similar experiences?

I had something similar early this year and thought it was related to the hot weather. As it turns out I think it was a tank of dodgy fuel as it was gone over the course of 3-4 days and after refilling. Could be worth filling the tank from a different source and seeing if that works?

I did first notice it after filing up with Mobil instead of Shell... though that was a couple of weeks ago.

It happens at exactly 1900rpm in D, and is more apparent at low speeds in higher gears. It is not apparent in S mode.

I just did a '10 sec throttle reset' and it is now much better (not as violent), but still there: it feels like it is spluttering. Only at 1900... not below, not above.

How do you do the 10 second throttle reset?

A lot of people on forums have questions about the DSG gearbox and in particular do notice, or complain of, a "hesitation" when getting going with it. Or they may find that it takes an inordinately long period of time for it to change up or down a gear. This guide is aimed at providing more...

              1. Engine off, key in accessory position.
              2. Wait about 30 seconds until the MFD goes out.
              3. Press the accelerator pedal down fully for more than 10 seconds (about 13).
              4. Release the pedal.
              5. Turn the ignition off and take out the key.

This seems to reset the CPU 'learning' mode. In my case yesterday I did the reset again (the 1700-1800RPM jerkiness was getting really annoying) and for the next little while I made sure I tried to keep the revs above 2000. I've done about 300k since (to and from the city 4 times) and it has been fine (jerkiness gone) so we 'll see how long it lasts.

i have the same problem, still cant figure out what it is. i get it usually at low revs & if your foot is off the accelerator. its like its about to stall or something. it doesnt always happen though, which makes it hard explaining it to the mechanics

For completeness, turned out to be a dislodged wiring harness for the supercharger! It was too short and the engine movement pulled it out, meaning the s/charger did not work properly. It was replaced under warranty and then was fine.

Last year I had the same problem again, but this time it was diagnosed as a problem with the exhaust gas recirculating valve or some such like. Was replaced under extended warranty. Problem reduced, by not eliminated - got worse over the next few weeks.

Several months later, I took the car to a different VW dealer and they replaced an ignition part (one cylinder was not firing) and problem solved... then I sold it to get the TDI (so my p-plate kids could drive it).
