Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Worrying sound

I've been hearing it for a while now but just recently it's started getting louder. It's like a deep rattle from the front rhs of the car only when I go over a bump or on a rough road.. Any idea what it could be?

It's very similar to a sound I used to hear on my old MK4, but the shocks were gone on that and given this car is only about 1 year old, could it be the same problem? (MY08 demo, only got it in Feb)

    Cheers.

I had the same problem... but when i was turning... thought it was the CV joint, but ended up being a broken screw with the Cat Converter... Took ages to diagnose... VW basically changed my brake bearings, checked engine mounts... and then finally realised it was the cat converter...

However, there can be many reasons, - best to take it back to VW and get them to road test it with you in it.

So should I call them up asap or just wait unil next service (7,000km away)?

And given my dealer is about 70km away, I hope they get it first go and I don't have to keep going back..

Call them, take your car in... get it test driven... They most likely won't have the parts in stock, so by the time your next service comes up, they'll have the parts in stock and you'll get it fixed then.

So I took my car in a few weeks ago and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. In fact they couldn't even hear the noise! So I took them for a drive and funnily enough they heard it.

When we returned to the workshop the mech but it back on the hoist and tightened the "heat shield". Made absolutely no diference whatsoever.

Fast forward to today where (with the help of my neighbour) I took the front right-hand wheel off to try and source the noise. After a few drives and pointless searching we found that the brake pad is actually loose (missing a spring or something that would keep it in place) and is causing it to slide around and hit the housing when I go over bumps.. Who'd have thought!

Seeing as there's no driving risk; I'm going to wait and bring it up at the 28,800km service.

Really silly question, transport rubber spacers still fitted to the front springs? I remember Highway VW forgot to take ours off our GTI during its PD.

if not tightened properly to begin with it may've come loose on its own over time.

we had a similar knocking noise in a previous car (name witheld to protect myself) from the front end when we braked. they had replaced the discs and pads before i picked it up. first decent application of brake it the knock was quite evident. had to argue with them that there was something wrong, took them for a drive to prove it and turns out that they hadnt locked the pad in place when they installed it.. so as pad hits disc it gets pushed backwards and forwards in its holder making the knocking noise.

That's exactly the problem I've got.. Now can I go to any old tyre place to get it fixed or should I wait for my service (about 4,000km away)?

And Thor Rau, not too sure if the brakes had been replaced recently as it was a service loan car before I got it.. But never in the 5 months that I've had it have they been replaced...

as gerhard says... get it fixed asap... any mechanic or brake place should be able to tighten it for you.
