i cant speak for everyone else, but i leave mine on all the time.
has never missed a beat. works perfectly every time.
in fact, the only time i really notice the auto mirror at all, is when i drive
a friends car that has a "normal" mirror.

      how old fashioned !

There's a button? Why would you turn it off?

Why would you turn off an automatic dimming mirror that operates based on light levels? You may as well leave it off and turn it on when you want to dim it so it's like a manual dimming mirror with a lever

Huh?? I swear that I've removed my centre headrest.. And it definitely is height adjustable...

Interesting. What year is yours? Mine centre rear headrest is definitely fixed - lord knows I tried hard to move it! I even checked the manual, and it says it's fixed and cannot be adjusted. As an aside I had to giggle at the manual which advises that if the non-adjustable centre head restraint is at an unsuitable height, move to another seating position!

Yep, that's what I do - but I had to block all light from the front sensor to get it to tint. Hence the black tape.

I recall reading lots of postings on this topic around here if you search.

I think basically there is a light sensor behind the mirror measuring if the light coming from behind your car is greater than light coming from the front of car then the mirror get darker with green tinge.

I don't use it though .. don't really like seeing things in green, and it doesn't give me a true perspective at a glance of where the cars are behind (unless the light is really blinding), I just adjust my mirror a bit higher than my eye-sight level.

mine does too (go green that is)

it def does not just do dark (unless the light from behind is very bright)

Sorry I'm not sure how the mechanics of how it turns green. You can do a test with a torch maybe?

I wondered this myself, so i looked into it...(yes my saturday night is that boring) and the following is an explanation I found.

The technology is called electrochromics, which applies electricity in order to tint glass through a low-voltage power supply. The electricity moves through an electrochromic gel placed between two pieces of glass during manufacturing, which have been treated with an electrically conductive coating.
Electrochromic technology is also increasingly included in building design with the use of so-called "smart windows," as an energy-efficient response to light and heat.
