Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How long to warm up? 2.0 TDi

Oh yes another thread from me

Is it just me or does the 2.0TDi take quite awhile to get to temp? Now that the cold mornings have hit i can drive a full 10 minutes and still only be 70c or so..

Is it just my baby? Or is everyone else the same?

I drive inner city traffic and it takes 10 mins to get to 90. If you are moving, it takes less time I have found.

      Howdy
Mine takes a while to warm up too in the colder months. Can be something like 10-12 mins and about 6-8 km into the trip. Afternoons are a bit better though.

The benefit (and curse) of having such an efficient engine is that you get less heat.

You may even find (I do) on some cold days (e.g. 4 degrees) that when you wait at the lights for a bit the water temperature actually goes down.

Anyway, your car has small heaters in the water loop to help heat up a bit quicker (AKA coolant glow plugs, different to your normal glow plugs). The Canadian and US market got a cool 1kW electric PET heater as well that provided a little bit of instant heat out of the centre vents. We didn't get that in Australia unfortunatley (you can tell by the fuses, we're missing a 200A one at F5 I think, and our alternators are 140A instead of 170A as 1kW at 13.8 volts is like 70A).

Good info here http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/, see the section on warming up although they are referring to the 1.9 AHU TDI engine.

Also note that the temperature gauge on the dash is basically an 'idiot light' like the check engine light and must be taken with a grain of salt. Mine shows 90 degrees when the water is anywhere between 80 and 100ish degrees. You can get a much more accurate indication by choosing HVAC diag channel 19.2 (hold down Econ and Up-vent, then choose 19.2 in the left display, the right display is water temperature in degrees C). You get useful heating from about 60 degrees.

Whoa! now THAT is interesting.. you mean i can change my MFD output to show temps?

Where do i find out more interesting things like that?

          And what is the up-vent?

          Awesome info mate

Nah, not in your MFD. In the climatronic displays (if you have climatronic). If you have climatic then you're out of luck unless you have VCDS.

I tried to wait my 2.0 TDI to warm up for about 20min in a 10 degree morning. After that the temperature gauge still pointed to the 50 degree......
I never tried to warm up my car again, just driving smoothly when engine is cold.

Mate, read the Diesel threads about warming up. Leaving your diesel idling isn't such a great idea. Get in and drive it conservatively for 10 odd minutes so that your revs are changing and you're less likely to glaze the bores. Diesels like to work.

Idle is a waste of time to warm up, as the exhaust temp is down about 100 degrees!! Drive normally, don't thrash it, but certainly don't baby it. Actra is right, work it baby!

Turn the Air/con "ON" to warm up a bit faster, if you drive short trips you can cover the front grill with vinyl or suitable material during winter months.
