  • Tyre pressure monitor

As some of you may know, i've just put some fully sick rims on my car and i'm just wondering, will the monitor still work without the stock wheels? If so, would the pressure be the same? (So I can reset it..)

As far as I know, they work on the wheel speed sensors, so a change will show that the tyres are flatter. Resetting it now should work?

    Someone should know?

Yeah, if it's teh same as the Tiguan one (which no doubt it is), the "sensor" actually works on the wheels rotation speed to determine the circumference and only when a wheels circumference differs from what's been set will the alarm go off. So simply reset your "sensors" and you should be fine.

the system fitted to our cars here in oz, is based on the ABS sensors, to determine a significant change to the rotating speed of a wheel,
in comparison with the opposite side wheel.

the systems fitted OEM in the USA are completely different. they use actual pressure monitors in the rim, and sensors in the guards.
much more accurate, but more complex, and expensive.

so in short, to answer the OP's question, just reset the TPMS once your new wheels and tires are fitted. job done.

Ok thanks for your responses.. Would the pressure be the same as what's instructed on the fuel cap or should I call the place and ask them?

              different profile, different pressures.

i'd guess about 42 psi going by the pic in your sig.

too low and you'll risk a pothole flexing the sidewall into the shiney wheel.

                  Sorry diggin up old thread.

I'm about to get new wheels too, did you just swap the sensor from the stock wheels to the new ones?

There no pressure sensor. Your GTI knows the difference between the wheel rotation speeds thanks to the ABS sensors. If one changes noticeably to a higher rotation speed in relation to the others it assumes the pressure has dropped and chucks the warning light.

The mrs kerbed on of my 18in Detroits 6 weeks after picking my GTI up. When she replaced the rim and they fitted the tyre off the damaged rim to the new one they inflated it to 36 PSI ( I was running 40 PSI ). It chucked the warning light 1km from the tyre shop so I would rate the system pretty good.

DUMB DUMB ME. I realised this is the MK5 section anyway if a mk6er is reading it here you go.

well i was digging around looking for the switch as I just picked up the new MY12 GTI and realised that the light would come up when starting the car but couldn't find the switch unlike in the MK5.

found it.... In the glove box... Just working out how to transfer it into the centre console like in the MK5's
