Using a high flow truck nozzle could get VERY messy

Reminds me of when I used to drive a prime mover (470hp Mack). I was in NT for first time and running low on diesel, pulled into the nearest hick servo - no high flow pump working. Do you have any idea how long it takes to put 900L in using a standard nozzle
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

...about as long as it takes to dribble in 55L with a high flow I'll bet.

when my parents and a few friends have got diesel cars I just recommended they go to the chemist or whereever and get a box of latex gloves, given the economy of most diesels a box of them will just about last 100,000km

How come a diesel pump is more messy than a petrol one?

Every diesel vehicle is so damn fuel efficient that the pump is hardly ever used and seals just perish.

Just kiding, ... petrol would evaporate, and probably if leaked it would have to be fixed faster(greater fire hazard) than diesel pump, which they probably neglect.

Petrol is more volatile, and it evaporates. Diesel is more oil like, and any spillage hangs around.

not helped by the fact that diesel tends to foam a lot when poured and that foam will come flying up the filler neck in the car and coat the pump

C'mon Logzy. Everyone knows it's so drug addicts can break into your car and steal your stash of panadol

Seriously though. It is a good idea. You never know when you may need to render first aid to yourself or someone else whilst away from home.

filled up my car at least 50 times and never had that happen.
Mine's got a big enough neck i can use the high-flow pump, sooooo good how quickly that means i can fill up and leave. But as has been said, most servos have a designated lower flow pump which isn't perceived to be as dirty as the truck pump.
They're really not as dirty as people seem to believe. Another one of those things where people read that they're dirty, and just believe it straight away without testing it. (obviously because walking up to a diesel pump randomly isn't the norm)

people seem to complain about "dirty diesel pumps" but there are plenty that arent dirty at all. i use one every week. its just the same as the petrol ones next to it.

furthermore, does the "once a week or less" notion of filling up at a potentially dirty fuel bowser really put you off owning a diesel? i would have thought there are far too many benefits to be outweighed by such a small negative aspect.

surely the fact that you will be at the fuel bowser less often with a diesel is reason enough.
I agree until you are dealing with common rail. Just done a course and the repair bill is scary when you get water contamination or the likes, lines, pump, and injectors req replacement, back in the days of the 1Z and AAZ it wasnt an issue

its not fun when you accidentally pull up in an unfamiliar servo at the hi-flow nozzle...takes forever to fill up without putting diesel everywhere.

...on another note, i've seen a guy grab the high flow pump to fill up a jerry can....big mistake...he was covered head to toe in diesel...it came back outta the jerry can like a geyser

When I filled this week I took a paper towel and wrapped it around the pump handle. Clean and easy as ...
