  • Removing the DSG gearstick/knob and boot

    Hi guys
I have recently acquired an R32 DSG gearstick/knob assembly and I was wondering how I can go about removing my current gearstick/knob in my jetta?

(p.s for those that don't know, its not just the gearknob. It's a whole assembly replacement. With the P R N D S and the + - all included)

Any tips on how to go about removing it?

    Thanks

We're talking about the knob, the shaft cover, the leather surround and the plastic surround (with the indicators) only?

Or the whole lot including the electronics below the leather and plastic surround?

Jeez, it better be - or he'd be off to a terrible start

The best description I've found is here:
All right. This is a fairly simple mod. However, I accept no responsibility if you break something. That being said, here we go. Note. I took pics halfway through the mod. That is why my original boot is trashed. Go from this To this First off you will need the following: -A3 Shift...

        and a brief description here:
like the title said, did anyone done it and can explain how to? I know there are people have done it but no how to..

The main difference between the 2 knobs is that the GTI/R32 button operates from the front of the knob, whereas the standard button is side activated.
It seems that there may be some bits underneath that may need swapping as well. Unless you do what the guy with the Audi knob did (1st link).
Good luck. Love to see some pics of how it goes.

No, I had mine replaced under warranty earlier this month, I believe that it's pretty simple to do. The only tricky bit is the trigger which needs to be activated before you install. From memory you pull the plastic part off behind the trigger and put something like a cotton bud in there so the button is sticking out proud before you install it. I'll try and find a guide on how to do it.

                Hi,
You will need the whole mechanism, you'll need to remove the exhaust and heat shield and console. A bit of time and patience will be required as I have done this myself recently!!!!!! Good Luck

You mean the whole $900 mechanical/electronics section that bolts down onto the floor???

yes because the lock out button is 90 degrees to the standard one and you can not pull it to bits to change it around

Pull the knob out and the whole assembly will pull upward.

Mine had the knob go in when it was off. But a bit of blutack pulled it out far enough to pull it out again

Drats. I was getting tired of my DSG and was thinking of getting a manual gearstick/knob and boot to change over on weekends.

what? you need the whole 900 mechanical electronic section of the DSG to change?!

900 bucks......and you got this done? why if it cost so much?
