  • DSG strange behavior!!Please advice

    Hi All,

I am experiencing strange behavior of the DSG in my R32 and would like to know if that normal (Only had the car for few months now).
Was driving on the M4 tonight and I was on S Mode doing about 100km\h. I had it on 6th gear as I did not want it to rev too much, so it was on about 2-3 rpm.
After few minutes of cursing, the DSG dropped to 4th gear on its own and obviously the rev went to 4-5 rpm. It did that few times at least.
    Is that normal guys??
I thought it was very annoying having the car change gears on its own when it’s in S mode.
When I was driving back on D mode, no issues what so ever.
    Appreciate your feedback

I know it has been said before that in Sports mode the DSG can be very slow to change up to 5th & 6th on the freeways. Anyway, it's more keen to run along in 5th than 6th...so it wouldn't really take much for it to slip down into 4th for some reason like a slight fluctuation in throttle. Based on this, what you've experienced may be normal.

yes thats normal - i have the same car

S mode = Sports and will keep the car in high rev range - you can manually change up the gears, but it will drop it back to 4k RPM about 15 seconds later if your plateau'ing around 2k RPM

D mode is for everyday driving and cruising on the highways etc

Too be honest i dont really use S mode unless im out having a sprint through the hills etc

No matter what I try, mine (not an R32 I know) will not get into 6th at 100 KM/H in S mode. S mode is very agressive and the slightest touch of the accelerator will kick it down a gear or two. S mode seems to me to be set up for flogging the ring off the car and probably not the ideal mode for freeway driving.

Thanks for the feedback guys. That does make sense. I will avoid being on S mode on the highways. Sux a bit as I like having control of my gear change, etc.

How did you put it in 6th gear? Did it change there itself or did you manually change to 6th using the paddles in S mode????

Stop swearing at the gearbox for a start. The DSG is a automated manual gearbox, S is sports mode and it will change gears before D will.

What would you like the gearbox to do exactly? You have it in sports mode and it's going to change gears for you. If you want to control EXACTLY what is happening you will need to put the car into M - Manual mode.

Check inside the glovebox for the users manual, it explains how the gearbox operates.

Put the gearbox in manual mode then

              Or buy a manual

                Maverick,

A it too late for a manual!

by saying put in manual mode meaning the D /+\- mode right. I should read the user manual I guess.

Also, I got on the highway on S, gunned it for a bit and wanted to cruse for a bit so I shifted gears up to six, and then the DSG shifted down automatically........

Yes that will put it in manual mode and it won't change until you get around the redline or the revs are getting too low.

The manual explains how the different modes work, theres a number of pages on the shifting side from memory.

Also, I got on the highway on S, gunned it for a bit and wanted to cruse for a bit so I shifted gears up to six, and then the DSG shifted down automatically........
When you change gears manually when it's in S mode (and I think D mode has the same timeout) it will stay in the gear for a certain amount of time and then change back to what it thinks is the correct gear. Put it in manual mode if you want pretty well 100% control.

Normal behaviour for a DSG in S mode
It wants to respond to your throttle inputs immediately rather than hunting for a gear when you stick the boot in.

I tend to leave it in D unless I'm coming up to a corner... then I'll use the paddles to jump down to second... then drive it out and let D take over again. S mode is fairly frantic for around town.

S only when having a run where I can drive "sportingly"

                      Operation above is normal.

For me S mode when in bumper to bumper traffic can be handy. I find whenever I put in S mode I can't help myself but to flick into M mode. D for me shifts up way too early I avoid D most of the time. Pretty sure different driving styles will predict what your preference is. As has been said, take even just 20 minutes and look it up online or in the manual.

When you're in D mode shift the gear stick to the left, then ull be in pure manual mode. Shifts +/- can be done in the stick or through the steering-paddle.
I cannot ever get 2 - 3k rpm in during crusing with S mode. It just love to be rev. I usually stick to D mode or the Manual override mode (left of the D) when i want a more sportier drive.
                          Hope that helps,
                          Edwin

why the hell are you guys trying to cruise at 100km/h in S mode??? then complain you cant keep it in 6th gear LOL and blame DSG for changing gears.

S obviously stands for Sport, which does not equal cruising. If you know how to use the damn gearbox, it does exactly what you want it to do.

If you want to cruise in 6th gear in S mode, drive at 200km/h hahahahah.

Exactly. Obviously NFI. I do not understand why people that dont have a clue wont just read the manual.
