  • Bi-xenon light question/HELP

    Hi Guys,

need desperate help. I had the angle of my bi-xenons on the GTI lowered recently by my local dealer to avoid the large number of people flashing me (I live in the country so there are no street lights to lessen the impact of the bi-xenons). They were pointed so high that street signs at 300m on the other side of the road were reflecting my light.

However, the lowering has not gone well. The lights now only illuminate 30m of road in front of the car. I nearly ran off the road twice tonight when it took a slight turn. Without high beam I would not have been able to drive it home. Oncoming traffic now totally blinds me as I cannot see the side of the road with my own lights. The reflector posts on either side of the road are not illuminated at any distance.

Can any one tell me how they calculate the angle of the lights? Is it in degrees or a ‘feeling’ the mechanic gets? I know that you need to hook the car up to a VAG-COM to adjust them but how do they know what angle etc?

I ask as I need the info to go back to the dealer with to try and get them to do it right.

    Thanks in advance.

I always thought the xenons were self levelling? Sounds like the mech screwed up majorly if he adjusted them that far down??!!

Do they still lift up/down when you turn them on?

People are probably flashing you coz they're just not used to the colour (country bumkins, haha).. I've never had an issue with mine... Love em.

Did you try standing outside of the car/down the road when they're on? Do they look that bad?.. Certainly street signs SHOULD be visable miles away....

Just go back and say they are too low now.

Or you can adjust them yourself, is pretty easy if you do a search. the RHS light should be slightly lower as to not blind oncoming traffic.

Grig, would you be able to post a link to that thread? Interested to see how easy it is, the dealers I'm finding are quite useless.

Both lights should be at the same height.
Drive up to a wall on low beam, trace pattern, drive back 20 metres, pattern should be approx 100mm min lower.

Thanks Guys. The lights still do the up down leveling thing. I walked out in front of the car last night to see where my shadow stops and it was about 28 paces. I'd love to be able to do it myself but I was under the impression these are software controlled things?

Can't really find the thread but there are two allen key adjustments near the back of the head light.

I believe there is a setting in vag-com that you set first before doing the manual adjustment. Its like putting the lights into set mode, then you do the manual screw adjustment thing.

It should be really easy to do however the lack of good information or the flood of conflicting information regarding drawing a line on a wall then driving back 5m or 20m is what makes it so damn confusing.

Under normal use the lights are self leveling. I guess im lucky with mine that they are not too low, not too high and ive never been flashed by anyone.

I know that due to my prev training in the auto field.

Did you training take into account the cross fall on the road which is usually cambered down on most normal two way streets?

I do feel the right side could come up a bit though, to appear more balanced.

                        Success.

You can adjust the height angle with an allen key.

Have now done so and there're better than they've ever been.

Wasn't winding you up, that's just what a mechanic told me and said they weren't meant to be the same.
