Brakes so damn sensitive..

I'd have to agree the Vdub does feel "over-assisted" as some have also mentioned. If you chop and change cars a bit I can see it would be a real pain, otherwise you should get accustomed to it. I hop into my EA once in a blue moon and it feels like there aren't any brakes at all!

Nothing wrong with my brakes.. i dont like brakes you have to press too hard like old/race cars, you just have to be smooth with the pedal (not stomp on it).

sometimes the car feels like it pulls up quick, sometimes it feels like the same pressure is not enough to pull up the car.
i believe the brakes are over assited to hide the fact that the rotors and the brakes themselves are too small and not powerful enough
give me a progressive pedal anyday

I had a car suddenly stop in front today... I just moderately applied brakes no problem

The Ford XR8 behind me locked up a bit and the prado behind him nearly smashed into him.

Golf was not even chirping wheels at all.

The type of car has nothing to do with that event, that's purely the delay in reaction of the drivers behind, each car applies it brakes slightly after the other one so you end up the cars further back having to apply the brakes harder to stop.

I find the brakes on the GTI are just fine and haven't had any problems with the stopping power.

The main reason to go to bigger brakes is that you have a larger surface area and heat can dissipitate better giving you the ability to keep reapplying the brakes without overheating them and reducing their effectiveness.

Any one who thinks they are over assisted needs to drive a mk1 and see the monumental improvement in the mk5.

Grabby, overassisted brakes? XA/B/C Falcons.

i think a lot of it is technique. i use the ball of my foot or toes and pivot my ankle to modulate the brake pedal whereas my swmbo (who has trouble braking smoothly) uses the arch of her foot and moves her whole leg up & down. Sometimes i think she'd be better off pushing the pedal with a stick.

I forgot to mention that i have a TDI.
i think the GTI discs are bigger.

Im not an engineer so i dont know the physics behind the whole larger discs, but in my mind, wouldnt the brakes be more effective with larger discs at the same pressure from the brakes than if the discs had a really small radius with the same pressure from the brakes.

like when you really stomp on the brakes, the initial bite is grabby, but continue stomping on the brakes and the retardation of the car does not match the initial grabbiness and just feels weak in comparison. the car feels like it takes ages to slow down.

This coupled with the DSG shifting down into gears making the car lurch forward while stopping makes the car unpleasant during hard braking.

I think also the big heavy diesel engine at the front reduces the braking performance

Isn't there a mechanical (higher leverage) advantage to larger rotors too? I.e. the further from the point of rotation that the braking is effected increases the effect? Or am I on drugs again.... LOL...
