^ It's actually a diversity setup, both antennas receive AM & FM, although the rooftop one generally provides a better FM signal. The smarts internal to the headunit looks at the signal coming in on both antennas and only lets through the signal that it sees on both, thus cutting out the majority of noise/interference (that will generally be different between antennas) - quite clever really.
