  • Diesel Chipping

Im new to the forum and new to diesel engines.
my question is this, from the reviews i have read they say DSG box can only take 350nm and the 1.8l tsi 7 speed DSG can only take 250nm.

in these engine chipping websites all claim to have more power and more torque, im worried if i buy a diesel or the tsi DSG and chip the engine it may damage the engine and the gearbox.

if i do buy one of these, im sure i will be happy with the power and torque but at some stage i will be very tempted to chip it.

    advice?

    Since you asked.
You have to make the decision:
    1. Who is right VW or Chip Company? Who do you trust more?
    2. How long will my car last?
I'm sure you find a lot of convincing post in here to chip.
You have to decide it is your car.
I enjoy my car as is, if I want fast car I buy a fast car and don't spend ridiculous amount of money to make a Ferrari or Porsche from Golf.
But it is only my opinion. Anybody else can have theirs.

I've read a lot of chip companies claiming that the DSG's are far stronger than what others claim and that chipping wont affect it but I wouldn't believe it becuase if the DSG were so strong then why wouldn't they mate the new Diesel with the new 7 speed DSG? Even the standard 2.0l diesel is in danger of breaking the new 7 speed. They must be that fragile. If you want to chip in the future go for the 6 speed manual - they can take the increase in torque no worries otherwise stick to the standard setting.

Go the cog swapping option. I love my manual. Short shift and very notchy feel. I drove the DSG when first test driving mine and was impressed but saved a few bucks going manual and never looked back.

Flash tuning is a hot topic here. Main players are ST3 and Bluefin if you're on a budget. If money is no object, there are more but I won't go there
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

Dont get me started on manual vs auto but unfortunately the Mrs cant drive manual and i have cater for both of us.
i learned driving on a manual and changed when i got married....its true what they its all down hill after you married... kidding

but i must stick to an auto...i guess chipping will be out of the question

I am in total agreement with you Poyta. I think I trust VW more so than any chipping company. Afterall, is the chipping company going to warranty your DSG gearbox after a flash upgrade?

I'd wait. I hear the GT TDI is on it's way, and in DSG form, stock, she'll go plenty hard, and you'll have Aussie 6 cylinder performance out of a frugal 2.0 diesel. Found a test from the netherlands or something, and the common rail was putting out virtually the same figures, but the power delivery will be better along with the fuel economy. From reports of the 103 common, the off boost power is better, given the more advanced injection method. Even more pollution control, but you can't have everything!

                  x 2.

i personally won't chip a car with 7sp dry clutch dsg but i would do it on a 6sp wet clutch one.

                  your call really.

Here's a thought for those who think the 6spd DSG is weak, and can't take the strain of a chipped diesel.

Imagine the stress on the box of using launch control (I know the diesel doesn't have it) on an R36 Passat - heavy car, lots of grunt, NO wheelspin = lots of drivetrain strain all going through the DSG box and clutches. VW sells it this way, folks, and does NOT void warranty no matter how hard you drive it.

Now imagine a FWD vehicle with 50nm more torque but copious wheelspin to ease the strain - there's no way the transmission is going to suffer as much load as in the R36.

Then there's the Sciroccos with 350NM which were thrashed for 24 hours around the 'Ring, and zero DSG problems. 350nm is the advisory absolute limit - most mechanical things will bust quickly when at their design limit, which tells me the DSG is nowhere near its limit at 350nm.

My Comfortline TDI has had a diesel power box in it for the last three years. It's great, but I had a problem some months ago that the VW service people put down to the box, and said it was not covered under warranty. (can't remember what the issue was now). So, herein lies the tale. If they think the problem can be caused by a chip - then it will be, and any repairs won't be covered under warranty.

I also had the same box in my Multivan. The van stopped one day, and wouldn't start. Did a lot of web surfing, and found some obscure reference on a web site to difficulties with the box. I removed the box and the van started first time, and hasn't missed a beat since.

that's why i want a flash tune, like the bluefin, or the ST3, so i can reflash it to stock if needed.

so far i have been unable to get decent info on the ST3, so ill probably go with the Bluefin.
my car is not under VW warranty anyway, so it really does not matter either way. there's no way i would use one of those cheap ebay "chip" things.
they are a simple resistor that fools the ecu, not really an ideal solution.

I agree with Transporter if you want to go faster, buy a XR6 Turbo it will keep you pressed in the seat until you chicken out.
