Can't quite see where they are coming from myself.
I have a mate with an E90 323 and the Skoda (118kw/250Nm) is no match for it. It's all over my clacker through a corner (and far more composed) and the Skoda just barely out-torques it in slower corners but ultimately loses out in most tests.
I'd buy the BMW in a heartbeat if it was within 25% of the Skodas price.
Dumb comparo and innacurate. (Do Singapore Jettas really come from Germany?)carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

I think it's a fair comparison, Though I haven't driven the Jetta tsi yet (hint hint, Jason)
A friend of mine who has an '08 325i with the M upgrade kit (that's 100K car drive away) took my GTI out last night and he was very impressed with it, he said it was quicker, and handled better than his BMW, quicker shifts, but he was surprised it shifted alot earlier in the rev range than his BMW, and then I relised he didn't even try it in Sport mode. but only D, and that is so tame in comparisonMY08 Candy White Golf GTI DSG

I just can't see 118kw/250Nm/1500kg/Front Drive/ being a match for 140kw/240Nm/1450kg/Rear Drive although he did comment that the Skoda pulls out of corners well.
The suspension in a Bimmer is generally better sorted than a basic Jetta/Skoda and the weight distribution is closer to optimum 50:50.
In a straight line, standing start drag the Bimmer will get the power down better.
Once you hit a corner, no contest. Bimmer wins.carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

Brad, it's all fun and games at the end of the day, I've been in a similar circumstance in NZ when I had a 1990 nissan Pulsar GTI-R, this thing had 165KW in a 1250kg 3 door hatch which meant for fun times back in 2002, it had a hard life and needed new seals in the turbo (puffing smoke between gears) but it still went well for a standard car....Anyway I remember a track day we had at Manfield raceway, I went out on the track with a mate, he had a new HSV 255 kw manual.... by the third lap I lined him up on the corner into the final straight, now here's the funny thing, this HSV should have nailed me in every way as my pulsar was designed as a rally car, it was way too front heavy making it a pain in the a*s in corners on a circuit but I learnt how to deal with that.... so the big tough V8 boys in the grandstand with tough stickers (tattoo's) plastered all over their arms were in awe when this little Jap 1990 model 4 pot with a hair dryer (turbo) blowing a bit of smoke took out a new HSV with tuned susp. there were cheers from the crowd.... obviously not from the tough sticker boys!! fun day.... I suppose driving skill does help in instances like these......Tiggy 125TSI, 6 speed manual, tints, comfort pack.

I've had some giant killer moments in some of my old cars - modded VW1600 was the best. Stupidly quick which left many unsuspecting people in its exhaust smoke.
Even the Skoda has it's moments - who'd think a $30k grandpa car would go like thatcarandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic
