  • My wife crashed the Jetta!

So, no need to go into details, but the entire bumper, headlight (Xenon) and fog light on one side need to be replaced.

The car is black, and as a result I have never been too much of a fan of the chrome overload (too much contrast for my taste). So this presents me with a great opportunity to tone it down a bit.

I would like to replace the whole assembly with that from a Golf GT (my personal favourite other than the R32). The smash repairer is happy to do so, but the local dealer has told him its impossible - even going as far to tell him it is "a completely different car".

The dealer supplied him with a very detailed CAD drawing of the parts from a Jetta, and what looks like an 'artists sketch' from the GT and GTI, which help VW's case that they are not the same (lack of detail in the golf versions make it really hard to tell).

The repairer is great, and basically thinks that VW are full of crap, but doesn't want to risk ordering parts that don't fit - which is reasonable.

His main concern is that the headlight is the same (shape and size) and that the washer assembly is the same.

Maca from this forum was good enough to give me the part # from the upper grille, but the dealer wouldn't give him the rest of the details when they found out it was going on a Jetta....

Over to you guys for any assistance which would be greatly appreciated.

Go on to parts4euro and they have kits for the entire front of each type of car. It would probably be cheaper than buying it at your local dealer anyway.

but if its going in for an insurance job, it shouldn't really matter anyway. I suggest you go to a different dealer with the part numbers and order there. If you look over in the states (golfmkv.com) you will see plenty jetta conversions with the GT grills and R-line fog light covers etc. Hell, you could even fit the GTI grill if you wanted to.

I'll check it out - cost wise it is a full insurance job, so it is only costing me the excess anyway

I am in country town with one dealer. The repairer is working with dealer so there is not a hell of a lot of fexibility unfortunately. He has basically said that they are blocking him, and he is happy to go and order the GT parts anyway as long as he can see some pics to put his mind at ease that he wont get stuck with the parts if they don't fit the Jetta....

I supplied the part number for the top grille that I got from Macca, but they even tried to tell him that it wouldn't fit (until he showed them the pics side by side) - they then told him that the upper grille would fit, but the lower grille is somehow completely different....

What is it with VAG? Do they honestly think that people are silly enough to think that jettas and various golf's are actually different cars??

Actually it's www.oempl.us that has the kits.

I'm, afraid its not worth trying to repair and perhaps time to get a new one?

by the way, how much is a new wife these days? (j/k)

the only car that is not compatiable is the R32 front, in which the bumper and centre grills are unique and made to fit with each other.

the GTI, GT, Jetta however, all share the same/similar bumpers, fog cutouts, centre grill cutouts and hence the parts are interchangable.

AWESOME - thanks so much. There is a link there that shows it exactly, upper grille and lower trim strip - all other parts will be the 'standard' jetta ones (i will leave the chrome strips on the headlight washer inserts)..

                  thanks again!

...and that's why I'm the only one who drives my car these days. I had my Bora less than a month - 1st time my gf drove it I had a rub mark on the front guard and the mirror shroud (brand new) was removed from the side mirror after an unfortunate reversing incident.

In the end though it can all be fixed and now you get to customise, YAY!

                        Haha that's high-larious!

That's crap about the dealer though.. They shouldn't refuse to help you only because it's going on a Jetta.. Go to a panel beater, ask them to order one as part of a "project" for an other GT and bam. But they seriously shouldn't be asking questions - it's non of their business!

It was the smash repairer getting the runaround from the dealer. In the end, with photos I supplied from oempl.us I was able to push it through.

Car goes in next week for 'conversion' (full GT front end but leaving the two little chrome 'eyelids' above the foggys for an individual touch).......

So, who gets the kids in the custody battle?

The Jetta just based on looks is a little wider than the Golf. I was infront of a Jetta this morning and for the first time saw one with xenons. Apart from the different chromed grille, you'd think it would be indistinguishable from an R32. I could pick it *easily*.

So to interchange a grille from a Golf would require modification. Doubtful it would be covered under insurance.
