    DON'T

i had mine taken out on friday arvo. it sounded great when i revved it in the shop, sounded great at idle too with this nice little burble to it.

    however...
the moment i pulled out of the exhaust shop and opened her up on the road i knew i had made a big mistake and i knew being a friday arvo i had no chance of getting it back in for the weekend

its way too loud and droney but worst of all it lost its nice GTI note. it didnt sound tuned and euro, it was just a noise.

i showed it to my mates and their consensus was "it sounds like even a fellow forum member's wife agreed with "sounds like being her phrase of choice.
worst yet my gf said to me "it sounds like a comodore".
so i was stuck listening to this crappy ass exhaust all weekend! it was only untill today i could get it booked in so it could be re fitted and thank christ for that.

it only cost me $80 in the end to take it out and put it back in so im not pissed about wasted money as its really bugger all.

i still want more noise and a nice note but dont let the american GTI owners and youtube videos fool you. it does not sound good in real life. i will eventually get a cat back resonated system but in the mean time im saving my money for other things.

so if you're thinking of taking the res out, for the love of god dont!

Thanks for the tip, I've always thought leaving the resonator, to avoid the drone, was a wise choice. Lose a muff for sure...

when i got it done i was thinking about losing the suitcase rear muffler instead but that would of been more complex job requiring new rear tips. certainly not a $60 job.

the way i see it with this excercise is dont be a tight ass, either buy a propper aftermarket system or get a custom one made up by an experience and reputable exhuast shop. theres no point chopping and changing OEM bits

Also seems silly to weld in a press bent section into a nice mandrel bent exhaust! And OH YES there's value in having a go yourself, it's just that you don't always win!
Overall though you win far more than those that don't even try!

                aint that the tooth!

yeah i know, the press bends were a bit rank but hey it was worth a shot. $60 doesnt get you much these days any way.

also i like to think i am doing the VW community a favor being the guinea pig for half ass car mods

You don't know if you don't try Mark, but $80 isn't much to worry about.

However You'd need at least a good hot dog resonator in place of the first resonator and even then it would probably drone.

me how the exhaust shops can't tell you it's going to be , or speak from experience. I'm still surprised that a lot of jap cars dont have as much of a problem chosing exhausts but then again they are a lot cheaper and probably get off the shelf systems.

I've been burnt too by those you tube exhaust vids from the states , as those guys are mad and their version of loud is about 5X ours!

Why don't you investigate into a Milltek cat back system. From what I have seen and heard, they sound wild. Much deeper idle note and definitely non intrusive and no droning. Anyone else had the same experience?

Which is why you have a go yourself. Luckily in my tractor it's going to sound like farm machinery anyhow, so it matters less to me, but I'll be making a bitsa probably with used large bore jap stuff, but with a normal tip!! Cannon free golf here!!!

greg's setup is quite like stock when cruising and opens up when you give it a bit!

get the hotdog on Greg!!! needs more noise!!! hehehe

It pretty good but could use move volunt when cruising, so think the first resonator coyot be smaller.

But doesn't take much for these cars to be too loud.
