  • RNS510 is noisy!

No im not talking about the speaker output here

Ive had the RNS unit installed aftermarket (by dealer), and its one noisy sucker.

Whenever the unit is turned on, I can always here a pitched noise. Loud enough to hear when sound is muted (and also continues when the engine is switched off for some time).

Im assuming its coming from the RNS unit, as it sounds like it is when i put my ear to it, and the noise wasnt there pre install.

This may be the hard drive , but why is it making this noise when either the CD or radio or AUX is being used? My main concern is overusage of some part of the RNS that could lead to wear/ damage.

Anyone else have this issue or knows what causes it?

(if relevant I have a MkVGTI)

It's the cooling fan in the rear, it's not that noisy however and you can barely hear it. You may have a faulty one if it's really noisy.

When you unlock the car and you open the door you will hear the noise start then and it will stay on for 20 minutes after you turn off the ignition so that it's ready for immediate use (and keeps your navigation running) when you're buying fuel, grabbing some lunch etc.

Its not the fan, the fan only comes on when it needs to and does not run all the time.
Its the hard drive which runs all the time.

I thought the fan only switched-on when the temp inside the unit reached a certain point

My guess is a noisy bearing in the HDD - in which case id be asking for the whole unit to be swapped ASAP

It actually sounds like a drive rather than a fan.

As to noise level, if Im driving and I mute the radio then i could hear it (faintly) if Im on a quiet road and not accelerating.

When the engine is turned off, it it noticable.

For the RNS 510 users out there, do you have simialr experiences to the above?

My car seems to have some engine whistle, that you can hear when the head unit is off.

I dont mind the HDD cooling sound as you usually jump out of the car anyway, unless your vol is set really low i dont see how you'd notice it that much.
