  • Coil Over / Spring and Damper discussion

Was looking into some coilovers for the GTI. Was wondering if anybody has tried the H&R RSS ClubSport coil over system yet?? As seen here http://www.eurosportacc.com/coilover.htm I know the car will be a lot harsher with these under the car but I was wondering how soft is the softest damper/rebound setting is?? Will it be remotely close to standard or still very tight?? My GTI will be used for weekend club track days and some road trips so i woulds like it some what liveable on the long trips would this be capable with a coil over system??

H & R are stiff . If you want a good coilover thats fairly firm , can be adjusted , made in Germany and something that your wife/girlfriend wont mind try KW . Around $2k for a set of limited editions

depends on the spring rates of the kit itself as well.........

but Seb has more experience with H&R stuff than me.

Mate has some H&R sports springs in his STI and the ride is VERY firm, KW still a good product? Was looking at H&R as they have a very good reputation.

ive got h&r coilovers on my mkiv and had them on my vr6 mkIII.They were the best money spent on my car.Im not sure what you would describe as harsh but nobody has ever complained of the ride, but the handling is unbelievable.
A mate of mine had kw on his audi a4 a few years ago and it was a completely different ride!try to ride in the same car as yours that already has the set up you are thinking of buying.

Good Idea will have to try and track down some MK5s with coil overs under them.

Would you change out the stock suspension on R32 with anything else? Bilstein or H&R for example?? Thanks.

A bit OT, but what brand are the standard GTI dampers?

funny that,H&R website specifies r32 as H&R----while Volkswagen uses them on the Golf R32, the fastest Golf ever. And recently, Mercedes Benz chose H&R suspension components
mk4 was definately H&R ,but milan was not 100% sure on mk5.

I am going the Koni direction on m y GTi soon. The cost is around $1800 I think. I will let you know how they are when I get them.

                              Good move Andrew

In my experience (albeit not on a VW) Koni offer a terrific combination of ride quality and damping precision.

BTW, would you happen to know who makes the std dampers in the GTi? Just curious.
