Replacing Rear Tail Light MY07R32

Exceedingly happy MY07 R32 member and been so for the past 4 weeks now. Just a question, i noticed my "MFD" has an illuminated globe, with a warning stating the "Rear brake light defective".

To test this claim i stepped on the brakes and only half of the rear right cluster lights up. I am to assume at this point its a matter of just replacing the bulb.

How much do Volkswagen charge for this service, or is replacing the bulb something relatively easy that the non-technical can perform, and save myself some money.

Other then that happy with my vehicle purchase.

In your manual are the instructions for this procedure, and a new bulb will be about $3.

Make sure you put it back together tightly, otherwise water will run into the cluster and you will have a greenhouse style fog in there which is hard to remove.

Thanks for the response i will definitely consult the manual. So i take it most of you guys tend to replace these bulbs yourself on your golf vehicles? If its only going to cost $3, i guess its something i should try as i imagine Volkswagen would charge me an (arm + leg) for the convienience.

Some dealers replace globes for free if you purchased the car from them. Others seem to charge $10-30 for the rear tail-light.

Buy a quality globe though like a Narva badged one and not a supercheap special as it'll last a lot longer and is better built for a few more dollars.

Yeah i think it will be more worthwhile just performing this work myself the manual breaks it down pretty easily, and teaches me a thing or two with car maintenance.

Where can i obtain those brands of globes from, since i don't mind the added expense. Supercheap auto?

Noticed the Narva branded ones appear on autobarns website. Will this product be adequate. Also should i specifically get the globe with the same wattage ratings as the ones which were included with the car?

Our dealer down here has sourced some heavy duty globes from VW that should last a lot longer than the normal globes. They fail regularly.
As for tightening the taillight up real tight, remember, they are only plastic and the 13m/m plastic nuts holding them on could easily be overtightened causing major grief!! They only attach them to the body and arent there to hold a submarine together

Supercheap generally only carry the unbranded globes, I'd go to Repco or Autobarn where you can buy Narva which are generally rebranded Osram or Philips globes. Generally the better brands will last quite a lot longer.

except it's a MY07 so 2-3 years old!

I will see if I can find a brand on the "heavy duty " ones.
I usually use Narva but prefer hella

I prefer Tungsram brand before Narva. Hella is better than Tungsram but more expensive.

Ok, I just checked the "heavy duty" VW dealer supplied globes that I stock and it appears they are GE and are marked as extra life.
Part no. on it is 1057D
