  • jetta TSI DSG query

I need feedback from other TSI owners that have used the "S" mode in the DSG.

what i have found is that in this mode it will not shift up to 6th gear if i hold my speed steady... it will remain in a lower gear at higher revs.
ie... travelling at 80kmh it will rev at approx 3000 in 4th gear and not shift up.

    is this normal??

    Yep.

I've found that if you have an aggressive style of driving (e.g. gears hold even when in D), it'll be even more sticky in S!

I use the flappy-paddles to change up (but this is temporary - after about 10 seconds it changes down again). I think the only time my DSG has even changed to 5th gear by itself while in S mode, was on the freeway traveling down hill... which is fine (S seems to be for racing and for uphill switchbacks - Lots of fun!)

Maybe we just need to go faster to make it change up

I was of the understanding that "S Mode" only used 4 gears with changes at much higher revs, I may be wrong though...

My 'S' will go into 6th on the highway. I've been known to forget about it and drive down the highway and it definitely goes into 6th.....eventually

In 'Theory' you could always travel down the m5/hume hwy near campbeltown late one night and put the foot down in 's' and get into 6.....

Haha that'd be even more confusing for one of my friends who got in the car and asked "What does the S stand for?"

I managed to get the DSG to select 6 while in S mode (I'm so proud). I was driving west on Mona Vale Road from Terrey Hills to St Ives (90 zone) in S mode and when I got to 90 (in 4th) I selected the cruise control and the box changed up to 5 and then 6. Stayed that way until I reached the 60 zone at St Ives.

                    So... it can happen!

i think "s" stands for Sports... But it could probably stand for Suicide..
Dont worry your gearbox is normal, the S mode barely ever reach gear 6. mine switch to gear 6 once during a highway cruising 120km

Don't want to bring up a Touareg in a Mk5 forum, but that too will only go above 4th gear in "S" mode if the cruise is active. I'd love to try it in my car if it wasn't for crappy Brisbane traffic all the time!

Could it be that using the Cruise Control automatically selects an "economy" setting and even though S is selected the gearbox is using a different algorythm/pattern/map?

This used to happen in several of our Commodores, our U13 Nissan & also (IIRC) our Liberty.

Well Im sure it would know you are not using S mode anymore as you are in cruise.

I was driving at 11:30 last night, so traffic was pretty light. I did manage to get the box to select 5th gear in S on the M7 motorway last weekend without the cruise control engaged (110kmh), but it would not select 6th by itself...
