  • adding OPS to golf 5 ?

    Hi all.

i have a question about he possibility of adding the Optical Parking System to a golf that didn't come factory fitted with it....

i am about to upgrade the stereo to the new RCD510, and it supports OPS (if it's fitted).
Does anyone know how hard / costly it's likely to be to add the sensors ?

the RCD510 also supports a reverse camera too,
but im assuming that would be out of my price range.....

    Jason.

You can add it easily enough, I've been working on instructions for this along with part numbers and will have it up on my website in the next week or so. Still working out a few of the connections for the canbus.

I've added the reverse camera, there are cheaper ways to go. I'm working on the how to guide as I have an issue with my unit that I have to resolve, should have this sorted and the guide up in the next 3-4 weeks.

          sweet, thanks heaps....

what sort of cost (if i do all the fitting) are all the parts ?
my car currently has no PDC at all.

so i will need the complete setup. sensors and all.

          Jason.

I'll be looking at that after this. The sensors are quiet expensive and if you do it as per the factory you have to replace the rear bumper but I'm looking at putting some flush mount ones into the black bumper and use the factory controller etc. Also looking at mounting sensors on the front by using the Passat controller.

ill watch your progress with great interest.

just looking on the bay, i find that the PDC modules are not that expensive.
              sensors seem reasonable too.

would the car already have the wiring in place for all these items to just "plug in" ?
or would i need to extensively modify the loom ?

              Jason.

You need to create your own loom. It's not that hard to do and you can bits and pieces off ebay to help you there as well.

PDC modules on ebay don't support OPS.

Price in Australia is around $245.

even $245 is not that bad i guess.

ill wait till i see how you go with yours....
i would have to disable the OPS on the RCD510 till i get the system installed.
as i don't want the RCD510 to go nuts looking for the sensors or module when i reverse....

i assume the OPS option can be disabled in one of the RCD510's menus (i hope so anyway)

OPS won't work until the CANBUS controller is coded for it, the head unit will then automatically pick it up and start displaying it.

You probably can't add reverse video with the RCD 510. Looks like it only works if ordered from the factory and even then I'm not sure how it works. There may be a different version of RCD 510.

i can live with out the Reverse camera, but the OPS would be nice.
also, i have heard mentioned that the RCD510 supports the air conditioning system too.

not sure if it will work with mine though, as it's not the climatronic one.
probably not. once again, i can live with that.

im just about to buy the RCD510, and hopefully it will all go smoothly.
i have heard of some people having power drain issues. some don't.

as i have no access to anyone with VAG software, i hope it's not an issue for me.
the unit i plan to buy, is brand new, pulled from a new 2009 Passat CC. (owner upgraded to RNS510)
so it's the latest version, with the newly redesigned software.

It does but you need the new climatronic module, not the old one. It's not a drop in replacement and would also require a different fascia panel.

Thanks for the link, however, that info seems to be all related to the RNS510.
not the RCD510 that im buying shortly.... eiherway, it looks like more trouble than it's worth.
