Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Uber noob needs help!

    Hi I'm currently in the process of purchasing a new mkVI and I'm looking to mod it slightly for aesthetics. I posted this in the mkV section because I thought I might be able to get more help here as more people check the V section

    Anyway, I have heard from people on here and dealers that any new mkVI golf or jetta needs to be fitted with suspension limiters aka bumpstops (i think) when upgrading the car to 18" wheels or anything bigger. I'm told it'll prevent rubbing or bottoming out or something. I plan on going aftermarket on wheels so I'm thinking of getting the suspension limiters installed upon delivery.

    My question is, if I choose to lower the car on eibach pro kit (and possibly koni shocks) at a later date, will these suspension limiters be adaptable with the new springs?

    Also, will these suspension limiters turn my car into a 4*4 on 18" wheels if i don't choose to drop the car?

    I'm am an absolutely noob when it comes to cars and would greatly appreciate any help!!! Thanks in advance

    If you just upgrade the wheels to 18" and lower the profile of the tyre (in other words, the diameter, with the wheel on, stays the same - then you won't have any problems).

    I'm no guru on the MKVI, but certainly with the MK5 you can't go too low before you start having bottoming issues (I'm talking under VERY hard cornering - if you drive normally, you can go very low)...

    So yeah I'd say you can easily upgrade the wheels to an 18" without ANY concerns, and you can probably drop it an inch or so before bottoming becomes a problem.

    It's only my opinion, but I'd rather keep the suspension taut - but not hard, at the expense of a few MM of ride height.

    From what I can understand, the VWs wheel arches have heaps of plastic covers and stuff inside them, unlike jap cars which tend to have much more clearance. I had to have my KWs raised a bit off their low setting, as I was having some touching issues under _EXTREME_ cornering (going around T-Junctions @ 60km/h).. But it's still very low.

    Buy something adjustable and you'll be sweet. Don't stinge out on your suspension, do it right the first time - otherwise you might be in a world of pain that can't be resolved without changing it out again)....

      No matter how big the wheels are your car isnt going to get higher or lower (unless you do it illegally ie 22's with 215/45/22 rubber or something.) If you are going to change the suspension then i dont know why you would pay more for this factory 'bump stop'. All shocks have a bump stop already so I don't really know what you are talking about.

      Keep in mind a lowered car on factory wheels looks better than a car with stock 4x4 height and fully sic chromies.

        Assuming you get lower profile tyres on the larger wheels, yeah.... (ie match the rolling diameter)

        VWs cant be lowered as aggresively as other cars, but they can still go down a fair way. Most people don't drive beserk around corners, but if you do - bottoming will become an issue earlier than other brands of cars... At least in my experience. There's all sorts of mounting bolts and brackets under the wheel arches that touch very quickly - again, at least on the Mk.5

        Original poster - in short, don't worry about it.... Get your wheels, and worry about settling your suspension with those wheels after.. If you can afford something adjustable, then go for it - you can tweak it until you get the height/bump just perfect.

        Just be prepared to pay for the privilage.

          I plan to turn this car into a soapbox! Body kit, tint, 18's and only slightly lowered (eibach pro kit) so i won't be doing any such things as hard cornering. Not into performance really, just aesthetic type mods as mentioned before.

          I'm told that these suspension limiters NEED to go on when putting 18's on the new golf VI. SO i'm thinking if i get the pro kit that they'll also NEED to go on the new springs.

          So will these suspension limiters be adaptable to the pro kit???? That's all im asking...

            Probably a question best given to the mob you're buying the suspension off, but it sounds VERY dubious to me. I'd say you'd be fine even without them.

            And if you're not going to corner hard, jeeze, next to no chance. I lowered my pirelli (which in itself is already lowered) another 30mm from stock, then had to wind it out another 10mm due to rubbing under crazy cornering.

            But yeah that's going on my Mk5 knowledge, dunno how different Mk6's are - but 20mm on a stock car is nothing. Those things look like you could go on holidays under the wheel arches.

              The limiters sound like a furphy to me
              16, 17, 18 19, 20 is only the rim size. The overall diameter stays the same or the speedo etc would read wrong.

              Check out this calc.
              Plug in the standard size and then the new size. Use smaller aspect ratio to keep overall diameter within 2%~.



              example: 225/40/18 is nearly the same as 225/35/19 etc

                18inch rims are an option on the golf VI, well at least overseas? just ask a dealer?
