  • Crackly Radio

I've had my Jetta for almost 2 months now, and everything's been perfect but one thing.

Alot of the time, the radio sounds like it's getting poor reception. It dips in and out frequently and sounds really jittery. What could it be? It mainly happens in Brisbane (Gold Coast stations are fine) and CD/Aux works perfect.
Hell, it doesn't even sound clear at the top of the Gateway Bridge!

I've told the mechs to take a look and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The car is a year old this month.

Ps. I'd like to point out my old VW never had a problem with signals around Brisbane..

    Thanks!

The two antenna cables could have been swapped at the factory, this could give you those symptoms.

Hmm ok, what does that mean? And can that problem be fixed by me in my garage?

      Thanks

If you're able to pull the headunit out and swap the antennas over on the back of the unit then yes. Otherwise it's back to the dealer and ask them if they would be willing to try that.

Ok thanks.. I'll have a look but when it comes to these sort of things it's probably best to leave it to the professionals.

Have you changed the original aerial at all ? I bought a shorter aerial from the UK which came with 2 lengths, the shortest one looked better but then the radio had crap reception, so I went to the next size up (which is still a good 200 - 250mm shorter than the original) and it works perfectly. I only changed it because I was concerned that I would catch the original on the garage door when reversing out, especially if I didn't have my Weetbix in the morning and didn't have the strength to lift the door all the way up It's also possible that there's a bad connection somewhere or even a crook cable from the factory

That's good to know Russ, as my stubbie aerial was on for a few days, and now lives in my parts tray, the reception even in the city was rubbish.

I haven't had a problem with my stubbie and it's worked great every time I've turned on the radio. I don't listen to the radio that much but I can't recall having any problems with reception anywhere around Brisbane (FM only - don't listed to AM). I picked mine up from parts4euro so maybe they build them differently or you have a dud one???

Mabey it's my aftermarket Alpine, but yeah, down the bottom of any minor hill and it was losing Triple M and B105 at Toowong!

Back to the fishing pole, and just living with it.

Cam's Comfortline has one of those "shark fin" styled aerials on it and the reception with that is perfect, go figure There was only about 200mm difference in length between the 2 UK aerials I bought, but the shorter one had hopeless reception and I live in a fairly open area with generally strong radio reception. It just goes to show that size does matter

I'd say so as G-Rig has similar problems with the stubbie with his aftermarket alpine. When his RNS 510 goes in today I bet the stubbie works well as it seems that the antenna adapters for aftermarket headunits don't work very well.

My radio reception was rubbish. I have the long whip antenna on the roof.

VW adjusted the signal boost apparently. Made a huge improvement.

However reception is still pretty crap with crackling driving around brisbane (FM).

But definately talk to your dealer first.

To be fair the Alpine has several FM settings, and I wouldn't be suprised if I just have it set up wrong. They are a complex unit!

It's not only the cars that move slow along there but the radio signals
