  • New Wheels for the Pirelli Ordered!

Well guys, I ordered my wheels.

Yokohama Advan RZ's (in that colour) 18x8".

    nicenice.

Standard wheels weigh 15.8kg, these are 7.4.... Single piece forged aluminium.

That's 32kg of unsprung weight saved right there, or the equivalent of about 150kg (!!) of sprung weight.

I so nearly went for 19s with some R-spec A048s....

But John from Wheel's World talked some sense into me.. He's alright hey.

    ETA 6 weeks.

The missus should have calmed down by then. They weren't cheap.

Pics forthcoming.... Well, in 6 weeks or so....

Well they're normally very expensive ($1500 ish each) if you get them from a non yokohama race product retailer (or so I'm told) - but the guys from WW are premium yoko dealers so they get really good prices.

They cost just a smidge under $900 each, but I'll need to spend another $200 or so to get OEM lookalike VW caps to go on each wheel. Should look the treat.

I'll mull over those R specs for a bit.. There's another $2k to get those, and they're only good for about 7,000ks.

I'm going to keep the original wheels safe and sound along with the OEM exhaust, brakes and suspension that are already proudly displayed in my shed... haha. You never know, I might need them back one day... Or I might put the R Spec tyres on these wheels and put the Pirelli P-Zeros back on the pirelli wheels later.. Dunno.

Other than looking horn, I'm really keen to see how it affects performance. Stripping the equivelant of 150kg of body weight off the car should make it really fly off the line. Granted it won't make any difference to cornering, but acceleration and braking should be pretty amazing.

I just hope the brembos fit under them. I know the standard Pirelli wheels are very _very_ close for clearance. About a mm - erk!

Just scoured the net and stole these pics..

The dood with the big brembos has the same brakes I have as well, so if you imagine this on a yellow pirelli, then you'll know what I'm talking about..

            Dig those VW caps.

              did that require spacers??

i think some guys in the US have fitted 8-pot RS4 brakes with these wheels and used spacers.

Your choice gets the Polarbear: "Real men buy lightweight wheels for an actual performance gain" Seal of approval.

You could have got them significantly cheaper through tirerack.
Also the standard wheel weight is about 12kg for the GTI stockers if I am not mistaken. Classicx VW 17's are only 11.5kg.

Remember I've got a Pirelli, it's got those 18x8" Pirelli rims...

I tracked them down, they're made by a mob called "Antera" out of Italy.

I hunted high and low for specs, and couldn't find any - so I wrote them an email and got a reply within a few hours.. The answer was, between 15.0 and 15.8 kilos....... ack. that's heavy. Lots of rolling resistance being thrown away with this upgrade.

Tim's other phone went off like 3 times when I was talking to him yesterday. Strangely enough it was when he was telling me about his new wheels, tyres, exhaust... :ballandchain:

Nice Wheels Kryten, I can't believe they're only 7.5kg I have a set of 15x6.5's that weigh that much and I'd call them light!

Yeah I'm busting. Just waiting on some info back about the upgraded intercooler and fuel pump and they'll be coming along shortly afterwards as well. Then I'm going to run very quickly out of mods!

Probably a good thing though, by the time I'm done with this, I would have spent a bog-stock entry-level Golf's price on mods alone... Ack....

There's a lot of conflicting info surrounding the validity of the upgraded fuel pumps for Pirelli/K04 configs.. Just trying to get to the bottom of it. Might be up for a GIAC DSG tune too.
