Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Bat poo

So about 2 nights ago, i left my car outside in the open air, and came back to find about 10 bright purple spats of fruit bat droppings all over my 2 week old CW..roof, sunroof, bonnet and driver's door. My heart stopped and i thought that these purple droppings would stain & etch !

I had bought Turtle Wax bug and tar remover last weekend and rushed home to spray some on. Left it for 5mins and rinsed it off.

Thank goodness it all came off with no permanent stains! *phew* all gone

careful..the tar and wax remover can stain/discolour the paint too.

Best bet is to get the surface prepped properly and give it a couple layers of synthetic sealent protection.

You'll need to use the right products to get a layering effect though. Depends on where you shop to get the right products.

Synthetic wax doesnt look as good as natural but it offers better protection. You can usually put a natural wax over the top once its cured to give it that sexy wet shine too.

Bat crap is the worst thing for your paint aside from someone running a coin over it.

Always remove it immediately, if you don't have water handy..spit on it, pee on it..use anything...just get it off. It's like bloody acid.

I would first off use a high pressure water blaster like a Karcher to blast off what's water soluable, then after its dried, use a good cleaner like your 'bug and tar remover' to dissolve the hydrophobic residue. I usually use 'prepsol' - like the one used by bodyworks to prep surfaces. This will remove all possible non water soluable stains, then use a good hard wax like Caranubra. Put two coats on, let dry, buff off, repeat again. Finally use a synthetic sealant - I use a Teflon sealant on it. Put it on, buff off, repeat. You should then have a great protective surface again.

I usually put the teflon sealant on every 3-4 months. Keep it up this way, you won't ever have to cut and buff your vehicle except every 2-3 years if you want to take any oxides off the top coat of the paint.

I have a white 2001 XC Barina which people are amazed with. Its as shiny and the surface baby bottom smooth, and water just glides off it. Its hard to believe that its 8 years old now. Still looks showroom condition.

I bought some paint sealant recently (haven't used it yet) but is resistant to "fall out"like that.

bat poo is the devil's spawn. glad to hear you got it all fixed up. a mate of mine parked his car under a fig tree many years ago. it was the only park left. he understands why now. 300 bats shat on his car all night and left a detailers worst nightmare.

                  Here's a thought....

They obviously can't crap when they're sleeping right? I mean if they were to, they'd just crap all over themselves.

One downside of being a bat I spose.

PS - just my advice, but don't put turtle on your car. Go for the good stuff, as others have said... Wax the bajebus out of it every 2-3 months, and you'll be right.

And washes are so much easier too... Goop just glides off.
