Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Climatronic - How does it work???

    Seriously, how does it work?

I turn 'auto' off, manually adjust, however it will still take control and adjust itself.

Is there any way to simply open the vents without fan running to allow fresh air to enter the cabin?

Auto functionality is fantasic but anything else seems difficult to control.

    Turn fan fully anticlockwise.

I suggest you read the manual. I have a GT TDI so I'm not 100% certain if the GTI has the exact same setup, but I can have air coming through the vents with the aid of the fan and no a/c. If you want to get the air to circulate better through the vents especially to the rear of the vehicle as well, you'll find it will work better if you close the top vent (the one in the middle on the top of the dash that looks like a speaker grill) the dial is at the front and you'll need to roll it anticlockwise to close it. If you put the fan on to a low speed the a/c will automatically start, to switch it off just press the a/c button and then you will get fresh air and not cold a/c air.

My reading of the manual was this (and I had to read it to figure it out!)

        - auto, aircon on = air from where it decides
        - auto, aircon off = air from where it decides as it will still try to maintain as close to the preset temp as possible
        - auto off, aircon on = temp set to whatever, aircon on, and the recirc button selected which is the top right one in the cluster of 4
        - Auto off, aircon off and no other lights on apart from fan speed = fresh air with the ability to control blower fan speed

I just leave it at auto and turn the AC off, it does a pretty nifty job of keeping the air in the car clean and at the same temp. It has a pollen filter too so the fresh air isnt always so fresh.

PS: I read that the fresh air vent is closed when you use the windscreen wipers to stop the smell from entering the cabin...well...mine doesn't work!

correct me if i'm wrong but i thought that was only the case with the MY09 models, as they have a VOC sensor that forces the aircon into recirc mode so polluted air doesnt enter the vehicle?
