After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • New Golf Owner with questions.....

    Hello all.

    ill start by introducing myself.

my name is Jason, im a 36 year old living in Sydney, and i just (yesterday) took delivery of a used 2005 Golf Mark 5 1.9 TDi comfortline,
with the DSG box. got it for well below market value too

so far im loving the car, but im having some trouble accessing the settings in the MFD.
i can flip through the two memories, and all the pages, but i can not for the life of me, get into the settings mode.
so i cant set the speed warning or any of the other nifty things mentioned in the book.....

the manual says to press the ok/reset button, then press the B (lower) side of the rocker switch for 2 seconds.
i spent about 30 minutes today cursing and swearing at the car. i just could not get it to work at all.

can anyone shed some light on this ?

    this is driving me nuts...

the only other thing i need to have done, is replace a noisy rear wheel bearing,
that's being done under warranty though, so it wont cost me anything.....

    thanks in advance.

    Jason.

    Welcome, Jason.

What exactly do you mean by "Settings mode"?

Glad to see you're enjoying your new car.

yeah, im loving the car, its really really economical too. im getting 5.9L/100 at the moment..... sure beats my last ride at 15L/100 !

the book says there is a settings mode, where i can select all kinds of things.
like set the over speed warning, set the mirror dip functions, set the headlight timers for coming home / leaving home mode etc.

i can not get into that part of the MFD.

      Jason.

Unless you have a full height MFD you don't have access to any of those settings. Do you have the half height or the full height? You can tell the difference because the full height one is a full screen whereas the half height only has a screen on the bottom half.

Full Height MFD in Australia only comes on MY08 GT Sports, GTI's and R32's along with cars that are factory fitted with the sat nav.

mine has the MFD that's in two halves.
the lower section has the gear position info on the right side,
and all the other info like average speed, and trip info etc.
the upper half contains all the warning lights for the car.

the book for the car says i should be able to access these things.

for example, i can turn the overspeed display on and off, but can not set the speed for the alarm ?
that seems odd to me ?

the manual says that i should be able to get into a settings mode, but depending upon specifics, some menu items may not be present.
i cant even get into the settings at all.....

have been reading heaps on the vag-com stuff, but i hope not to have to do that. cant afford $500 + just to tweak a few settings.......

Sounds like the MFD is half-height which mean you can not access the settings mode without VAGCOM, however you should be able to set speed limit warning just by cycling through the up-down buttons on the right-side cluster of 4 buttons on the steering wheel.

I think it's after the average trip km/h and before the minutes lapse time.
Press OK to enter the edit mode - then up/down to choose the km/h speed and press OK again to set.

Edit: you can ask around if anyone who has vag-com in your area is able to lend it to ya?

              ok, thanks.

so it looks like the book is NOT very clear then.....

anyone in Sydney with access to VAGCOM feeling generous ?
i really would like some of these settings "fiddled" with, but i dont have the $$$ to spare after buying the car.

i don't mind paying a reasonable fee for the service.
just cant swing the big $ for software and cable that's probably only going to be used once or twice....

Try reading the start of that section as I'm pretty sure it talks about the two different types of display and what the features are of each, from memory it also mentions that if you want to change the other settings to see your dealer (or as you requested find someone with vagcom/vcds).

believe me, i have read that bit over and over.

from what the book describes, and looking at the pictures, i have the MFD that should allow the changes.
though it's looking less and less likely at the moment....

i have the one that has the gears indicated vertically along the right edge of the MFD.

the other MFD has them along the lower edge.

at least that's my understanding anyway.....

i will go and re read the boo again in the morning though, just to quadruple check

Don't worry Jason, the VW manual is VERY confusing, and it does take some time to work out what applies to your car and what doesn't. On my first read, I got lost too, so you're not alone mate. Don't let all the big brain types on here beat you down, they have the benefit of experience.

Mine is the small display and I have altered the speed warning without problem (or reading the manual).

OK, you have half size MFD, I have gears on the right side as well. Therefore you don't have access to ANY settings except speed warning. You should be able to set speed warning when you press and hold the button. When you press it once you reset previous setting, press it second time and you should be able to set it according to the speed you are driving. I don't think you can set anything else

I also spent some time trying to access the settings menu on my Transporter with 1/2 height MFD, VW manuals definitely aren't very helpful in telling you what a particular vehicle has/hasn't. I got my dealer to change some of the settings next time it was in for a service.

                              thanks for the info guys.

looks like i will have to either go se the VW dealer, or find someone with access to the VAGCOM software.....
