Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hey is it possible to change only the rubbers? Without having to go to VW and change the entire cluster?

I've tried to remove the caps but didn't want to force them in case of a breakage..

    Thanks

No rubber only you have to replace the complete arms.
You should be able to get an aftermarket blades from Repco. They would be Bosch.
I wouldn't buy Trico brand - they want you to change the wiper blades every 6 months, so don't expect that they would last you much longer.

there is a thread on the forum about changing the rubber blade only...

I followed it and it was do-able, however being KMart special rubbers, I now need to change them again.

          You betcha!

In the past, I used these instructions from PassatWorld but I think there are similar posted here. Try a search.

Yes, the trickiest part for me was removing the end caps without breaking them, but it is possible. Instead of pulling them out with pliers I think I levered them out from the underside and from the other direction.

Also, I found that I needed rubber-only OEM type refills that normally work with metal inserts. I ended up getting Trico Teflons. They did cost a fair bit more that what I expected (something like $14 each blade) but the mount was identical to the originals and they have a micro edge which still work well after 18 months. There are others which probably work as well and are much cheaper.

          Have fun!

Go talk to vw. some of the early models cant have the rubbers changed.

But they will sell you rubbers only or the whole thing

That's not a bad price really. My blades have lasted nearly 3 years now so I think i'll stick with genuine.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....
