get an MK4, they are more fun and they will keep their value better than MK5s. I went to syd last month and i saw a minimum of 1 MK5 R32 every time i went out (few times a day) and i saw 0 MK4 R32s. MK4 is a cult car already.

Maybe you shouldn't listen to me, i own one and i am biased when it comes to this

i was told that they were heavier, not as "sporty and sharp and responsive" but of course were cult and more "raw" which i prefer.

the Mk4 seats look amazing but the new Recaro option on the V's look snazzarama too.

I think the MKIV R32 will become a classic. Compared to the MKV It is rarer, more hardcore and it doesnt look like any other golf on the streets.

Thank you all for the suggestions so far.

As to dealer demos, I reckon they'll all be thrashed from day one. My local dealer WILL lend you a vehicle overnight for test driving purposes, so what happens between 5pm and 9am is only known to the borrower - or the Police for that matter.... and if you were to test drive the R32, wouldn't you like to test out its tuned pipe stereo? Which translates to high revs and its cornering ability?

I was told by a friend who is a dealer that prices are softening in Qld and Adelaide, and it is going to hit Sydney and Melbourne after Easter, so if anyone is contemplating an R32 in the second hand market, perhaps wait a couple of weeks since the wholesalers would be the first to know, and I know of a wholesaler who turns around 80-100 cars per week, at an average of $800 per car !!! He is also of the sentiment that prices should drop after Easter.

Just like all cars, once the new model is released, the old drops in value. So the MK5 will drop in value. And the MK4 will drop even further. No question about it.

If you like the car and can get a good deal, go for it! They sound amazing, handle well and have a little bit of go

The upside of buying a demo is you KNOW it's been run in hard, and in a hi-po 6 cylinder I can think of nothing more important for the first few hundred kms. Sure the clutch, brakes etc etc will have had a fair wack of life removed, but these are consumables, and relatively easily replaced.

A demo DSG car would be limited somewhat by the gearbox, aqnd remember cars have a rev limiter for a reason. The R32 has been built to be driven, and of any of the VW range, they would handle being a demo the best.

Get a full warranty, a decent price, I'd certainly consider it. Get them to bend over on the extended 6 year VW warranty ( not a crappy aftermarket one ) even better!

Mate these are great points and although I believe them, I was wondering if anyone else would say it so thats a good thing. I definitely think cars nowadays don't have their engines run in on a test-bed platform (they used to) and basically get put together and pumped out onto the streets. At least with a demo you know its been run in properly.

I'd like to go for a MkV for the creature comforts and the inevitable refinements thats been made to it. Surely the engines aren't the same across the 4 and the 5?

BUT, the case for the Mk4 is very compelling. I mean I can get a forum member's Mk4 for an amazing price and we know its been cared for. sub-$30K prices for a great Mk4 versus mid-$55K for a new/demo MkV.... there's a massive difference there.

Take a test drive of both to be sure.

i am pretty certain that the engines from the MK4 and MK5 are near idential with just some minor differences to the airbox design etc.

for me, i wanted a NEW car and hence i bought the MK5 brand new and not a demo either. as i plan to keep this thing for a while, this was important for me.

if for you, who plan to lease it for a certain period, perhaps a second hand car or a demo maybe ideal for you.

you just have to weigh up your options!

But weighing up my options is so hard to do as i am a bit of a purist and would dearly LOVE the Mk4 but then my sensible side kicks in and wants the Mk5. but then my other sensible side slaps me and says to look at the huge price difference.... bvery very confused, especially now that you say the engine is essentially unchanged.

major difference of course is the DSG

for the price you pay for a brand new mk5 r32, you could get a turbocharged mk4 R32 HAHAHAAH

but in saying that, i have no regrets in buying my car, i love it to bits, and im sure you will enjoy both the mk4 or mk5.

the other thing to note, the mk5 may have more creature comforts that will make it a better daily driver than then mk4. Maybe have a look in the MK4 section and ask those guys there about the r32.

for me, the dsg is one of the best things about the mk5. and for the daily grind in traffic, it is an absolute pleasure to use.

I am of the same opinion as well. Drove the DSG a few times and just love it.

I am also torn between the sense and sensibility of MkIV vs MkV, huge price difference, essentially same running gear, same grin factor, about $25-30K cheaper - justifyable??

The other forum member's 160,000Km r32 looks the trick with the white powdercoated wheels. I wonder if he has sold it yet.

Correct. I own one of only 32 Mk IV R32s. Geddit (32) in NZ.

I only drive my MK IV R32 every couple of weeks/months and sometimes I wonder why I own it, but when I go for a drive I remember bigtime. I sold a worked WRX that would rip it's panties off performance wise but wha wha wha just for the sound wha wha wha.

You can get a mark iv r32 for high 20s and a mark v for early 40s. No more than 15 -18. And don't forget you are getting something quicker and most importantly newer. The mark iv is 7 years old now, you are buying technology from 7 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

True true but how many Mark IV v Mark V R32s r there in OZ? In Enzed the Mk IV is as rear/rare as. If we all wanted a qwik thing we would bye a insert blank.....

MkIV is lighter than the MkV.
Only thing that's wrong with the MkIV is the stock shocks need replacing with Euro spec ones as opposed to the US spec ones they come with.
MkV has an excellent chassis and suspension setup due to MkV advancements over the MkIV.
However the MkIV has the looks both inside and most definitely exterior over the MkV.
At the end of the day I wouldn't be dissapointed with either but I would take my MkIV every single time.
Oh and in 100,000kms of driving the only thing that's gone wrong with my car is a leaking stock Monroe shock, a parking light bulb and a reverse light switch.
                                Viva la R32.
