  • Jetta TSI tyre life

just passed 33,000k's and have been told i need new tyres. last 5000k's or so have noticed the road noise from the tyres steadily increasing over time.
what have others got from a set of tyres???
I think this is quite early to be changing tyres on a car.
not sure of the brand (never looked but will find out) but they are the 18's that came with the charleston wheels.
Mechanic says they are scrubbing out the inside edges.

Is this common? and is there a fix so i get longer life from the tyres?

previous cars i have had easily get around 80,000k's from tyres.

You drive a chipped turbo FWD car so I wouldn't be surprised at the tyres wearing out at 33,000km.

Depending on your driving style, tyre maintenance (tyre pressures and alignments) and the type of tyres on the car that's pretty good mileage.

If you want more mileage you have to go for a harder wearing tyre, this means less grip. You can't have it both ways, you can have a higher performance tyre or a higher mileage tyre but with a chipped turbo driving the front wheels you're pretty unlikely to get anywhere close to 80,000km.

Seeing as the tyres are the only thing keeping you on the road I wouldn't be skimping and getting cheap tyres. The tyres on the car are probably CSC2's which are an excellent tyre or maybe the Dunlop Sport Maxx.

If there is excessive wear on the inside of the rear tyres it may help to have the alignment checked and adjusted if necessary. Some Octavias (same mechanicals as Golfs and Jettas) came with too much camber, which wore rear tyres prematurely on the inside of the tread on the rear.

Running underinflated can also wear tyres on both outside edges, whereas overinflation wears tyres in the centre. "Scalloping" or "saw tooth" wear is usually caused by misalignment, but out of balance tyes/wheels and/or bad shock absorbers can also cause weird wear.

i would think my driving style is pretty relaxed since i carry our daughter in the car most of the time i drive it. i certainly dont hammer it everywhere i go or spin the wheels at every opportunity.
i like the tyres that are on it as they have performed well in the wet grip wise.
i maintain the pressures every 2 weeks or so and haven't noticed more than 2-3psi drop over that period.
i have had an SS commodore in the past with 220kw, soft tires and still got 70,000k's out of a set that a mate had to replace at 25,000k's with the same spec car, so would've thought the jetta would get better than 33,000.
oh well.. will have to get vw to check the suspension settings when it is in next....
        thanks.

Well I want some of your magic dust. 70k's in an SS has to be a world record. In my BA GT, without too much skylarking 30k was an effort.
My Golf is at 35k's and I reckon I'll make 40k on these tyres. You'd have to drive like a baby to get a whole lot more in my opinion, and as Mav has rightly pointed out you can't have a chip, extra power, and expect consumables to last.

AWD is very kind on tyres. We got 100,000km out of the OEMs on the Liberty.

You don't actually say whether you've looked at the tyres yourself - It might be that the mechanic is being a bit conservative.

What pressures have you been running & do you bother doing a tyre rotation every 7500-10,000km? Are all 4 buggered or just the front tyres?

By the looks of it, the Octavia will get about 40,000km out of the CSC2 on it but that's running 36/34 & with regular rotations.

You can't compare RWD with FWD in terms of tire life. 80-90K km on RWD is very normal, with Golf mkV I had original NCT5 that lasted 45K km

You're doing well, my GTI tyres (CSC 2's) have only done 22000km & I estimate they'll be on the indicators in another couple of thousand. Nice even wear, just fast. I don't tend to abuse the tyres (much) and rotate them every 7500km.

80-90K on a RWD is normal? The only way that would be possible is with ultra long life no grip death for sure tyres. If I got 30K out of a set of tyres on my old EFII Fairmont Ghia that was good going.

I have done 41000 kilometers in my Jetta, and the origional Continental tyres are still like new.
I previously has a TS Astra, and noeone beleived it when I got 90000 kilometers out of the origional tyres.

The RE050A are quite a soft tyre - Treadwear rating 180 IIRC. They are also OEM on Subaru Liberties & in the Subaru group I'm with a set could last anywhere from 15,000km up to 45,000km depending on the driver. 30,000km is probably about the average.

The RE050A aren't cheap but they are an excellant all-rounder. I'd estimate you are looking at ~$380 per tyre. The Bridgestone RE001 Adreniline will be 90% as good for about $200 & the Pirelli P-Zero (Nero?) will be a similar price/performance compromise.

                              quote for RE050A's is $580 a tyre.
have heard good things about the Adrenalines so will get some quotes on them also.
