  • Sold my GTI yesterday and couldn't sleep last night

I have only had my GTI for sale for 1 week and it sold for $34,000. It was a 5dr, white, manual, no options with 25,000km on the clock. I decided to sell it due to dwindling second hand prices and mt wife not really utilising the cars features to justify the investment, and insurance etc.

The people came and picked it up last night - they were really nice people and so excited. It was my turn to cook dinner for my wife so I invited them to stay and we had dinner as I explained how to work the car etc. They had never driven a VW before and owned an old Nissan Pulsar so they were loving all the features.

I was really happy with the price we got for it, but once they had left I kind of felt like I was saying good bye to an old friend. Actually made me feel sad and last night I had a crap night sleep dreaming out it.

It's amazing the emotional connection we have, especially with a car that is just SO good. GTI's really are the nicest cars I've ever driven but today $15,000 will be off the homeloan and we pick up our MKV sportline this afternoon.

And that is the right decision.

    Yes...

    It is...

    Um....

    Hmm...?

Feeling for you mate, I dont look forward to ever selling my GTI as it is by far the best VW I have ever had. One day though, maybe when the Mk6 GTI is released it might have to go.
15000 off the home loan is good and you are picking up another Golf today, thats even better.
You have done the right thing,
Hope you sleep tonight. Sounds like the GTI has gone to a good home.

When you guys rightly take over the spot Top Gear Australia has, and you start getting ludicrous cash, your Aston daily driver will make the GTI a distant memory!

Well done. You still get to drive a Mk V, AND reduce you home loan. I think it is a good deal.

Sad to see the GTI go, but you got a good price for it.
And 15k is a nice sum to subtract from your loan.

I wouldn't be too upset, you're still going to be driving a terrific car!
The Sportline is a beautiful car. And there aren't too many of them around either, atleast when we were looking we only came across one. A blue sportline down in Canberra.

Its lucky that you're getting into another Dub so soon.
Post pics when you get it!

Yeah you have made a good but hard choice.

When you pay the house off sooner you will be driving your TT RS sooner! haha!

              Your sportline petrol or diesel?

Blair, sad to see you've sold the beast, but probably the "correct" thing to do

Damn, dont you hate being rational and right?

I know exactly how you feel. I'm a relatively old fart - 38 - and have had so many cars - more than I care to count - every one of which I was emotionally in love with at the time. Some great cars.. V6 Astinas, V8 commodores, a monaro, several Civics and so on (haha ok those were the early days) - not to mention some fantastic bikes - CBR600s, CBR900's, ZX9s, ZZR1100s and an R1.

You'll get over it, there will be PLENTY of new cars. The shock will pass.

When you get your next 'choice' car, this one will be long forgotten. It just takes a bit to get over the loss.

Trust me you'll get over it. Cars are really important (passioonnnnnn!) but the most important thing is to get your financial house in order. Nothing makes you more secure and able to spend SO much more in the future, if you get the basics covered first.

Hey this is the same GTI that is/was on might car mods?

                    cool....

Which one of the 'duo' are you?

I concur about the wifey driving the car. I had to empty all the crap CDs out of the glovebox too. I'm not game to show her how to load songs into the RNS-510, otherwise I'll be inundated with R&B rubbish.

Gotta keep it strictly 80s.... Hammer time.

I strongly advise all to watch Bana's "Love the Beast", it goes a little way to explain this phenomena .

I know a few guys went to see it at the last GTG, I watched it this week.

Hahahah, old at 38 - that made me chucke You, good sir, are a relatively YOUNG fart !

However, your advice re finances is very sound for such a young person -

Being debt free is a tremendous feeling, and that was my first priority on the money part of my life. I have owned everything including the house since I was 41, with the help of a redundancy. I was able to take the redundancy which all my workmates could not, because I had only a small mortgage and no other debt and they all had large mortgage and huge credit cards as well.

Sure they probably had nicer things than we did, but they still have debt 18 years later, whereas I am the opposite (but share the grey hair ).

Yeah, having your financial house in order gives you so much freedom to do pretty much whatever you want. The original poster is doing the right thing, I only wish I'd done it when I was 15 years younger..

To the original poster, the trap to watch out for now (which I fell into time and time again), is not to pine over the loss and go out and buy another one!

Get your finances under control, then you can do whatever you want without fear of losing what you have. Then maybe buy some assets that the government/banks can't inflate or take away from you.

Got the sportline 2 hours ago. Inside has been detailed. Dropping it off for an external detail in 20 minutes before I present it to Mrs Blue Reality at dinner time. I got a 6sp manual in black magic, anthracite interior. Really happy with it!

kryten2001, yes it's the white GTI from Mighty Car Mods. I'm the guy with the white guy fro (actually you can't see it cause I'm always wearing a hippy head band when we shoot)

This episode is what started me thinking of selling it - it's a true story...

And there is some nostalgic MK5 GTI action in this one...

You are a wise bunch you Watercooled people. Feeling much better after reading your posts. Pay off house, reduce debt, buy better car later.

Thanks gang - I'll let you know how the sportline goes!
