curious to know what sort of kms people have got out of their stock brake pads before replacing...

i know there are many variables on manual vs dsg, style of driving etc...but throw some numbers around.

and did you replace with oem or upgrade.

I got 30,000 out of my first set, and then replaced 2 sets in 30,000 after all the track work I did last year. I also went through 2 sets of rotors.

To make sure I don't have to replace them so often I now have these bad boys:

That's because at our age everything's an uphill battle, and we don't need brakes any more.

I've only got 7500ks, and I don't think I've wiped all my pads off the rims yet..although it seems like it.

my jetta TFSI is currently at 15,000kms and the pads still ave 90% remaining...
although the amt of brake dust that comes from them are nothing short of ridiculous....
if i wash my car and drive around for about 4 days normal driving, the silver rims become a nice shade of gunmetal/bronze.

i want to change to other pads which don't emit as much dust as these stock ones seem to do

Yeah what is the story with that? I notice it on my GTI, but also almost all VW, Volvo, Audi that I see are like that - whereas other cars seem not to be.

Is it a function of the brake pads, the wheel design?

It's like that on virtually all Euro cars, not just the ones you mention. They like soft rotors and soft pads, the extra dust is a result of no longer being able to use asbestos in the pads.

The stock pads are Ferodo, and yes I couldn't agree anymore with you Steve, the amount of dust is RIDICULOUS! I've been looking at alternatives.. EBC sure looks good

The front pads on my TDI lasted 79000k's while the rears were gone in about 67000k's I think from memory, I was suprised how long they actually lasted esp considering my driving style isn't the best.

                    Out of curiosity:
                    1) Are there better aftermarket pads out there?
                    2) Which ones are they?
                    3) Where would be best to purchase them?

if you jump into http://www.venommotorsport.com/ , these guys specialise in vw mods in the uk. you can check out different rotors/pads etc.

from what i can tell here on watercooled, EBC are the most popular upgrade.

i know that your local endless dealer may be able to get their hands on some low dust compound pads for the GTI.

when i need new brakes, i'm ordering mine from overseas (UK). in most cases, even when you factor in shipping, it's still cheaper.
