Checking oil on MkV TDI

As has been noted elsewhere, it is quite difficult to check the oil on TDI equipped MkVs with that black dipstick. I've tried using a sheet of paper to blot the end and see where the oil level is that way. But not sure this is a good idea.

Other than trying white shrink wrap, does anyone have a trick or tip that can make it easier to see black oil against a black marker?

I sprayed the tip of mine with white Duplicolor enamel, used a grey primer first and then a coat of white over the top. It's been like this for at least 5 months now and apart from a couple of small scratch marks on the ball part the paint has stayed on OK. Makes it a lot easier to read the level.

Yep, I just sprayed the end silver, white would be better, but still can be tricky to read. You tend to draw up oil in the pipe when pulling it out, and it messes up the end, so it's not a simple thing to do compared to a "normal" blade dipstick.

A good point. Which beckons the question, is there an aftermarket blade dipsticj suitable as a replacement?
