Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sounding the horn when you lock the car?

It only locks itself automatically if you unlock the car and don't open a door within a short period of time.

It won't lock automatically if you have stopped the car and gotten out.

My car sits in the garage unlocked all night and is never locked in the morning (the passenger doors and rear hatch stay locked however).

For me, I like to be reassured that the doors are locked properly when I leave the car. Sometimes you are in a rush and you cant check the door handle to see if its locked.

With the Ford Falcons, you press the lock button once to lock and once again to confirm that the lock is done. The horn sounds very lightly and is not annoying at all. I saw somewhere that there is a option in Vagcom regaring this but wanted to know if its doable.
With my Jetta if there is any door ajar while pressing the remote lock button the amber blinkers do not flash.

Then if I have made sure that all doors are closed properly and press the remote lock button again the blinkers flash, so in a way my confirmation is by the amber blinkers.

Having just returned from 4 weeks in USA, having a horn chirp for a fraction of a second for lock/unlock is very common over there. Virtually every new hire car we had had this feature. Was a handy way to locate your car in a crowded car park as well.

I wouldn't mind having the feature enabled either if it exists. Having an audible horn chirp is another way of letting possible opportune thieves know your vehicle is possibly armed with an alarm.

The amount of time that it sounds would is only a fraction of a second and realistically it's no more annoying than a neighbours dog barking, the garbo truck or anything else you hear for a moment.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

Yeah it would be good.. Even if it was only on lock. Our old Voyager would only chirp on locking the car.. And sometimes the sun is too bright shining into the tail lights to see the LED's flash.

So as a result.. I presume and pray that it's locked.

Upgrading the LED is another option.

And you can choose to have it on only for lock and not unlock when you program it or only on for unlock and not lock.

As far as I know you can make the car beep on locking/unlocking through VAGCOM. On the Polo's however, it is a deafening sound (i think it's through the actual alarm siren) that hurts your ears even in the day time....it would wake up a whole street of a night time. People who had theirs turned on when they bought the car had it turned off straight away.

I would imagine the Jetta's would have the same setup, so best of luck with it!

Upgrading the LED's? What do you mean?

I think Maverick's probably referring to the small LED light in the top of the door trim (drivers door) which indicates when the alarm is activated. Maybe a larger brighter LED which can be seen easier ?

                    Ohh ok.. Thanks for clarifying..

I mean yeah while a horn chirper would be good, it's nothing i'm going to write home about.

I also had a Falcon with the second push of the lock button on the remote, sounded a beep from the horn. Ever crossed a busy street and the missus says did you lock the car. It is a great idea and I would install one if available.

It's would be even worse if you can't remember where you parked the car after crossing a busy street

I prefer the silent but deadly approach, so I have the chirp turned off. I just watch the turn indicators for confirmation of locking at a distance (it is surprising how far away the remotes operate both of mine).

Personally I find that the big "thunk" as the 5 locks activate enough of a clue that the car's locked (from an aural POV).
Visually, the indicators flashing and the interior lights dimming (at night) also are sufficient for me.

However, I guess if it's daytime and noisy, the horn thing may be an OK thing.
Having said that, I had a neighbour who was a shift worker with a POS Excel with an alarm that chirped 3 times on lock/unlock, and it gave me the frikkin' irrits at 3am most mornings

BTW, it was one of those alarms that randomly went off on windy days, when the sun came out from behind a cloud, if a cat jumped on the bonnet &c, &c and then went into one of those wailing, screeching, hee-haw, woop-woop performances until he finally chirped it off... Trouble is, he was such a terrifically nice guy and would apologise profusely when it happened - thank god he was transferred to Darwin...

But haven't you often wondered why your neighbour always starts mowing his lawn at 6.00am on those sunday mornings when you get home late after a hard saturday night out ? (and with his noisiest mower too)
