Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    hi guys,
How much did everyone pay for their Jetta 1.4 TSI?.

And also did you find it harder to bargain since its relatively a new car??

Isnt VW doing a driveaway promo on the Jetta? There are definitely good deals to be had at the moment.

Just bargain, if you can prove to them that you know what you want, and you have the money for what you want, they will/should be able to come up with something...

or you can always buy used...

Frankly speaking I would be scared to death putting my money on VW with this new engine. This engine has to run in constant "overdrive" to pull the weight of this car in both turbo in supercharged modes. Would it last for long? There were reports from different sources that turbo on PD 2.0 TDI engine runs only approximately 150K km. Unless you plan to use it till warranty expires...

To quote a famous red headed Queensland ex politician, "Please explain". That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me.

To the OP, I don't think we have many members with Jetta 1.4TSI yet, but there are a couple. Do a search for Jetta 1.4 TSI and you will find a couple of members who have bought them. Maybe PM them to get some guideline pricing.

Does that also mean that the Golf GT Sport 1.4 twincharger is running in overdrive? - whatever that means - usually overdrive is used to take the strain off an engine & reduce revs.

I've driven the Golf GT 1.4 twincharger and thought it a fairly relaxed drive if you weren't giving it a bootful. maybe that's the problem, these engines are so delightful that you want to give them the welly all the time.

Does the PD TDI use the same turbocharger as the 1.4twincharge? If not, then the comparison is somewhat irrelevant.

We have been working on the twinchargers for two weeks now - our current test car is a new Jetta DSG (7 speed) with the 118KW 1.4.

Its a fabulous motor - the supercharger only works up until ~ 3500rpm & cuts out by design (switches to the turbocharger).

Its a fantastic design - pushes the car along very, very well - and when tuned, you will be surprised at just how fast & flexible it is going to be!

sorry for this, I meant "driven hard", it has to run at high revs all the time, right?

I had a new TSI Jetta as a loaner bout a month back, and I must say I was pretty impressed with the way that it drove. Felt very smooth and effortless. Would be very interested to see how a chipped one goes!!

OK, now I understand. From all accounts this is not so, supercharger operates at low speeds and turbo at high speeds giving boost across the entire rev range. All reports I've heard are that the engine is extremely torquey and flexible with great fuel economy (except perhaps when being booted hard!)

                      Cheers

Not when i drove one. It was a torquey & tractable engine. Mixing with other Sydney traffic, I just used 2000-3500rpm and it seemed nippy enough.

Correct. The 2500 - 3500 rev range is where both compressors are 'handing over' - the s/c reducing boost as the turbo's boost is coming on line.

The supercharger also has the ability to switch on momentarily at high revs as well. For example if you are cruising at higher speeds and want to overtake, it will cut in to supply boost until the turbo gets back up to full speed (then it cuts out again). Pretty cool, eh?

Nay. If it didn't have two forms of forced induction that would be true.

                              I hardly go above 3000.

                              Just pulls.

Also it is only running up to 1.5 bar max boost and most of the time less than half a bar boost. ~7psi.. thats not much boost at all. It is just that it has that boost from off idle.

Additionally, I would be the TSI 1.4 block is a lot stronger than the 2L ones. It is similar dimensions but with smaller bores. It is made out of Grey cast iron with lamenar graphite coated bores. It has graphite coatings on most of the parts including pistons, valves etc. Its a little Panzer.

The supercharger would be very very reliable also. My dad had a charger also by eaton on his jag and he had that 10 years. No problems. Superchargering is a very basic and zero maintenance technology. The rotor's are not touching so no wear, just spinning off crank.

Turbo will die LONG before the supercharger does.
