  • Aleksii goes APR Stage 2

    Hello all,

Perhaps I should also introduce myself, as I have been on here for a short while now, but haven't really making any threads. This is my first one, apart from a couple of For Sale ones. I've spoken to a few of you guys on here but really hoping to catch up with some of you on the next GTG.

I have a white 2door GTi with 18" forged wheels, colour-coding, Carbonio intake, and now Forge DV & 3" TBE.

Well I have been Stage 1 for a while now, and as much as I loved the convenience of instant power, I also sometimes hated it with a passion. Quite often I'd find myself wishing that there wasn't that much torque down low (taking off at lights, or at Willowbank ) So I read up on the Stage 2 upgrade (Down pipe/TBE and DV), looked at the dyno graphs and thought it'd be a worthwhile thing to do. And it was.

I was lucky enough to find a good-priced 3" TBE by X-Force and Forge DV.

Everything was smooth from start to finish; got the exhaust and DV delivered on Monday, spoke with Mike (Mike Webber Prestige & Performance), confirmed that he can fit it all on Wednesday and so developed mild anxiety until Wednesday afternoon

I dropped my car off on Tuesday afternoon so that I could avoid early morning traffic and considering I had to start work at 6.30am on Wednesday, I would have struggled to get it over there in the morning.

So I called Mike at 10.30am, and was in disbelief when he had told me that he had already fitted the DV and exhaust, and just needs to get the reflash done

I finished work at 2.30pm, and yes, my day dragged on and on and on. But I got to Mike's shop (Clarence Street, Coorparoo) just after 3pm. Got an excellent price on fitting and re-flash, and exceptional service.

We didn't get a chance to put the car on the dyno, but hopefully that will happen either tomorrow afternoon or next week.

So I turned my car on, and it was exactly what I was expecting. Not too quiet and not too loud. It has a very throaty sound, and when you push it to about 2500rpm and back off it burbles nicely. Sound inside is not intrusive IMO, you definitely hear the exhaust, but you can still cruise along at steady speeds without a constant drone.

Driveability has changed tremendously. Although there isn't as much kneck-snapping down low there is a lot more in mid-range and top-range. In comparison to Stage 1, I would say there's a tad less pull in low revs, but a noticeable amount more pull in mid and top range. The car now powers through to red-line without any feeling of strain in the higher revs.

So all in all, at first the car felt slower, but now that I have driven it around last night, it feels much smoother and quicker.

IMO, if you are considering going Stage 2, it's very worthwhile. I guess you just have to think about whether you love your low-rev torque, and are you are willing to leave it behind for a more powerful and smoother powerband.

    Cheers guys

Hey Aleksii nice write up mate good to see you like your new mods

APR HPFP this will give you more grunt it's totally ridiculous

Mike at Prestige and Performance does a great job and at a good price!!

Going there on wednesday for a service highly recomended him for all those

who don't want to go to the steelers!

Thanks Luke, Mike really is great.

I went to him for my first service (2yrs - 25,000kms) and it was only $240, whereas VW wanted $420 :O

I'm loving the exhaust, and taking the car for a big drive tonight.

Quick question, how does a high pressure fuel pump give you more grunt? Doesn't it only supply more fuel faster than a stock pump? So its really a supporting mod and not a power mod, no??

As some of you may be aware, when tuning the mk5 gti it's essential that you increase the volume of fuel to match the volume of air being compressed.

When getting the HPFP the ecu has to be recalibrated it'a a mod with in itself
Which takes the car to stage 2+

More torque low down the gears tend to hold alot longer in each gear to get
benefits you must be stage 2 or ko4.

I don't work for APR just a satisfied enthusiast speaking from experience

For more info look up apr website

          cheers

Same could be said about intake systems, exhausts and filters though, enabling more air flow than stock systems. Upgraded intakes systems, exhaust and filters are all considered performance modifications...

I do believe that the HPFP will give you some added power, but I guess it would be minimal when compared to Stage II or Stage III turbo upgrade. There are a few guys in the states who claim that they have the Stage 2+ software with just a down pipe and DV, and no HPFP, apparently because there is more torque down low.

But then again, this is me just speaking from what I have read, not experienced.

I guess the only way to really find out is meet on the M1 or at Willowbank

No Luke, not cold all year round mate. Only getting into the mid 20s at present with 15 degree morning trips to work. We have had some warm weather here over summer. So much so I had to check my GTI with the vagcom to see why it was down on power.
All good now that the weather is cooler now.
You fellas up there would struggle to find out how much power these things have in really cool weather though. 0 degrees minus in the morning in winter and they are an absolute weapon!!

Yeah I can imagine. It's the only reason I pray for a really cold winter, to get the turbo out there spooling! Much better turbo weather at the moment though, temps are dropping down nicely at night time.
