  • Idle Issue

Ive done some searches but cant find anything like this....

I have an 06 TFSI with DSG. When I am in drive but stopped, the car is very rough, almost like it is trying to edge forward and rpm varies from 600rpm to 900rpm. When it hits the lower rpm it almost feels like it is going to stall. I have tried different things ie air con on and off and different levels of pressure on the break etc but it doesnt make any difference. P mode dosent seem to be as bad.

I have my 60,000km service next week which hopefully fixes it but wanted to check to see if anyone else has had this problem. I love the car but always get paranoid that it is going to crap itself. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Cheers

My Polo GTI had this issue where at the lights it would slowly drop right down to 600rpm and then jump up to about 900rpm.... then settle back to 700-750rpm. It only did it once each time I came to a stop. It didn't really worry me that much so I left it.

I had an engine code come up recently which was a faulty o2 sensor (lambda probe). I had it replaced under warranty and the RPM drop at idle has not happened since! Maybe your o2 sensor is on the way out as well, it's a pretty common issue with VW's unfortunately.

It's not a major issue if your o2 sensor is faulty, it just means your car will be running either rich or lean 'til it gets replaced. If you haven't had an engine light come on, I wouldn't worry about it.

    Cheers,
    Rhys

It definitely sounds like an o2 sensor issue - I had the same problem in an '04 V5 Bora. The good news is that it is an easy fix, and like what [-Polo GTI-] has said, no real harm will be done before it is fixed.

      Best of luck.

You can get similar symptoms with either a split vacuum hose or (more likely) a loose battery terminal. FYI I've also had to have a new O2 sensor on my '07 Golf GTI, but in my case idle was fine, every now and then it would miss like crazy on light throttle openings.

I had a problem like this with a '93 1.8i Laser, turned out to be a crook idle control sensor which is attached to the throttle body. Not sure if VW's have this or not but thought I would add my experience as a possibility as the symptoms sound similar.

            ok some developments.

Not long after my first post I had to go out and 20min later I had a warning light on the dash...The one that looks like a little engine. According to the manual this is an exhaust based issue.

I quickly called VW and they said it shouldnt be anything major but nurse it into them and they would look at it straight away. He checked it out and it was a dodgy breather valve. An hour later all was sorted under warranty. They also replaced the fuel pressure sensor which was a VW recall part apparently??

Anyway a bit of a pain but it ended well. I was impressed with VW getting onto it so quick.

            Cheers
