  • Selling my GTI - Buying a POLO

Most of you have probably seen this video:

Well funny thing is that its actually the truth. My wife is still driving around in the MK5 every day and, well I'm not. So the time has come to sell the GTI because she doesn't really use any of the 'GTI' bits and we pay more for insurance etc

I bought is so I could drive it around and enjoy it but then I lost my parking as our work moved to an area with no garage so now I do the 3km commute on my Super Motard and park on the street/footpath because there is no street parking.

I sold a GTiR to buy it and I still think that the MK5 GTI is the best hot hatch around but it's just not being used to it's potential and my wife just putts to work in it. In my opinion she would be just as well off in a Polo or a MK5 1.6 Golf.

I said "Babe, how about we sell the car, and I'll buy you something else closer to $10,000-$15,000 and we'll put the rest of the money off the house"

And she said "OK that's fine"

So I showed her a photo of a Suzuki Swift (new style) and a VW Polo. She took one look at the Swift and said "There's no way I would drive something like that, I'd much rather another VW"

So I showed her a pic of the Polo and she said that it "looks the same as her current one anyway" so she'd be happy with that

In a worst case scenario, even if the car sells for $30,000 and I buy her a car for $14,000, that's $16,000 extra in the pocket.

So at this stage I'm on the lookout for a Polo and she has put the GTI is up on carsales.

(Yes I know we won't get $34,900 but we're not in a hurry to sell it as we own three cars between us and a motorbike. We will negotiate with whoever is interested)

But while having a look around carsales, I'm wondering if she would be better with a MK5 Golf (not GTI) or a Polo because you can get either for around $15,000. Some decent POLOS with low KM and warranty for around $13,000 even. So it's that or a non GTI GOLF? Any thoughts on this for a short city daily commute?

I think going from a Golf to a Polo (GTi or not) would be a bit of a change for your wife

I would get the Golf...bigger, comfier and more fruit

    ps - i drive a Polo GTi

You could always go for a Golf TDI, plenty of power, excellent economy and should certainly save you $ on insurance over the GTI. Do an insurance comparison first at least, it might be worth consideration.

Good luck with the sale. The first picture makes your car look silver due to the angle and lighting.

Although you are not in a rush to sell, its a good idea to price the car realistically. If you price it too high, you will scare off some potential buyers who may not think that they can knock too much off the price.

Be sure to wait for a facelift Polo or score a price break on the current one!

                Good point.

Thanks for letting me know. I changed the pic to a more 'white' looking side view. There are not many in white and I know when I bought mine I only wanted white even though I was offered a much lesser price if I bought a different colour.

I have been thinking the same really about selling the GTI but I've only had it for 6mths or so. I was considering getting rid of the GTI and buying another Golf in a cheaper bracket and be done with that but not sure whether I will like down grading. I was thinking along the same lines...a nice holiday and putting money towards the mortgage.
